World of Warcraft is set to release Dragonflight Patch 10.1.5, which introduces exciting new features such as the Dawn of the Infinite megadungeon, quality of life updates, and fresh overworld activities. One of the most significant additions in this content update is the Augmentation specialization for the Evoker class. With a captivating Black Dragon theme, this spec offers a unique twist to the DPS role by providing buff support to other players as part of its rotation. While similar concepts have been explored by other classes in the past, Augmentation Evokers take it to an entirely different level.
Game Rant had the opportunity to speak with Graham Berger, senior game designer for World of Warcraft, to get insights into how the new Evoker specialization operates. As a support DPS class, Augmentation Evokers introduce a brand-new playstyle to the game, catering to both solo players and those in group settings. World of Warcraft has made sure that playing as an Evoker is highly satisfying, regardless of whether you're adventuring alone or with others.
The Impact of the Augmentation Evoker
Despite being categorized as a support specialization in World of Warcraft, the Augmentation Evoker is primarily focused on dealing damage. According to Berger, the class can queue as a damage dealer for dungeons or PvP and fulfills that role. While the Augmentation Evoker possesses unique abilities, it is not intended to replace healers or tanks or introduce a new role. The objective was simply to provide an additional option for DPS players.
It is worth mentioning that Augmentation Evokers may not output as much raw damage as Devastation or other DPS specs. However, Berger clarified that the goal is for the new spec to have a comparable impact to any other DPS class in the game. Regardless of whether they are in a group of one, five, or twenty people, Berger emphasized that Augmentation Evokers are equivalent to one additional DPS player. Nevertheless, their contribution to the group will differ from that of a traditional DPS, so players may need to adjust their perspective to recognize their role in the party's success.
"When playing as an Augmentation character in World of Warcraft, the damage that you indirectly contribute to others will be displayed in the damage meter add-ons under their names. It is important for players to recognize this increase in damage and attribute it to the buffs they are receiving from the Augmentation player. Additionally, Augmentation Evokers have specific abilities that directly enhance another player's damage. These enhancements will be visible in the breakdown of the other players' damage, with the specific ability, such as Inferno's Blessing, being credited for the additional damage.
To further emphasize the impact of Augmentation players, World of Warcraft has introduced floating combat text on the battlefield. This feature allows players to visually see the buffs they are receiving and enables them to identify exactly who is benefiting from their abilities. This ensures that Augmentation players are not simply adding hidden calculations behind the scenes, but instead, their contributions are transparent and acknowledged by the group."
In the past, buffs like Priest's Power Infusion in World of Warcraft would often spark debates and jealousy among players competing for them. Berger reveals that the early versions of the Augmentation spec encountered a similar problem. "We attempted a mechanic similar to the Paladin Beacon, where you assign a marker to an ally and a significant portion of your abilities would automatically target them," Berger explained. "However, this resulted in them ignoring the Evoker and not acknowledging their presence because they were not benefiting the rest of the group."
To ensure that the new class archetype in World of Warcraft was felt by everyone in the party, Berger and his team included abilities that would assist tanks, healers, DPS, and the entire team. Tanks can utilize the Blistering Scales ability to increase their armor and inflict thorn damage, while healers can receive a buff that allows them to cast spells while moving. Moreover, the entire team can enjoy enhanced speed and statistics. "This emphasis on a group-oriented, selfless approach felt much more satisfying... It doesn't matter what role you play in a dungeon, everyone gets to experience the presence of the Augmentation Evoker."
How Augmentation Evokers Work in Solo Play
One concern with playing a DPS character who boosts the damage of others is how they fare when playing alone. Many healing specializations don't have strong offensive abilities, causing players to switch to tanks or DPS roles when playing solo. "We don't want you to feel like you have to switch to Devastation just to be effective when playing alone, whether it's because you enjoy the playstyle or the rotation," Berger emphasized. He wanted to ensure that playing as an Augmentation Evoker would be rewarding in all aspects of the game.
Interestingly, WoW's new Augmentation Evokers actually play more like tanks when soloing. "When Tanks play in the open world, they typically gather a group of enemies, group them together, and use area-of-effect attacks to defeat them," Berger explained. While they may not have the same level of damage output as other DPS classes, Augmentation Evokers have unique utility skills that provide them with strong survivability mechanics, which are rare for DPS classes. These mechanics include abilities that allow them to cheat death and improve their defensive statistics.
The Augmentation playstyle involves using your abilities strategically to fly over enemies and deal damage while taking less damage yourself. However, it may not have the same direct damage output as the Devastation playstyle. Despite this, Augmentation Evokers can still benefit from their buffs even when playing alone, as many of them can be applied to themselves. This allows players who prefer the Augmentation spec to play solo without needing to switch to Devastation.
The Evoker specialization in World of Warcraft is a game-changer. Its unique DPS playstyle allows players to enhance their allies' abilities. The developers are confident that players will embrace Augmentation and enjoy buffing their friends to maximize their potential. Augmentation marks a significant shift in the DPS role that will have a lasting impact on the game. The developers are excited to hear players' feedback on this new addition. World of Warcraft is currently available for PC.
