Warning! This article contains spoilers for Ahsoka episodes 1 and 2.
Summary
Episodes 1 and 2 of Ahsoka uphold Disney's tradition of surpassing George Lucas' contributions to Star Wars. This is evident through the introduction of the colossal hyperspace ring known as the Eye of Sion, which goes far beyond Lucas' earlier depiction of smaller rings in the prequel trilogy. Disney's commitment to outshine Lucas' concepts shines through in the impressive portrayal of the Eye of Sion.
The use of hyperspace rings in Ahsoka, unlike previous examples, seamlessly integrates into the franchise's history. These rings, introduced in the High Republic era, provide a reliable solution for intergalactic travel, aligning with the need for tried and tested technology.
Continuing a trend in Disney Star Wars, episodes 1 and 2 of Ahsoka introduce an element that builds upon George Lucas' original concepts. This trend first emerged with Disney's debut in the Star Wars universe through Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Following Lucas' creation of the Death Star in the original trilogy, Disney expanded upon this concept by introducing Starkiller Base, a significantly larger iteration.
The content continued to include other elements, such as Disney's Star Wars ships. One notable ship from the original trilogy was the Super Star Destroyer, but Disney took it even further with the creation of the Supremacy, Supreme Leader Snoke's enormous flagship for the First Order. Interestingly, in episodes 1 and 2 of Ahsoka in Star Wars, another technological advancement from George Lucas's Star Wars prequels was surpassed.
Ahsoka's Eye Of Sion Is A Lucas Idea At Incredible Scale
Ahsoka's Eye of Sion is a colossal hyperspace ring, intended by Morgan Elsbeth to locate Thrawn in a far-off galaxy. While the name is a nod to Star Wars' Darth Sion, the actual structure is an amplified version of Lucas' concept from the prequel era. In Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, hyperspace rings enabled non-hyperdrive ships to travel through hyperspace, but they were typically small. Jedi in the prequel trilogy utilized smaller rings that could even fit in their Starfighters. However, in Ahsoka, the Eye of Sion is immensely massive, surpassing any previously seen hyperspace ring in the prequels, demonstrating Disney Star Wars' penchant for surpassing George Lucas' original ideas.
Imitation Is The Most Sincere Form Of Flattery - But This Works
The imitation of Lucas' Star Wars ideas in Disney's properties is flattering to the franchise creator's works. However, Ahsoka provides a more organic example. This is because of the history of hyperspace rings in Star Wars. The Nihil of the High Republic created these rings, which the Jedi then adopted and integrated into their own methods. Since hyperspace was relatively unfamiliar territory and still not fully understood in the Star Wars universe, it makes sense for them to rely on tested technology for traveling through hyperspace.
Therefore, it feels more natural for Elsbeth to use a hyperspace ring to locate Thrawn. It would be illogical for her to develop an entirely different method of intergalactic travel, which could jeopardize her plan. Hence, the recent incorporation of Lucas' Star Wars ideas into Ahsoka's storyline is much more successful, considering the franchise's technological history, in contrast to Disney's previous examples, which were familiar but lacked proper development.
New episodes of Ahsoka release every Tuesday at 6pm PT / 9pm ET on Disney+.
