A fan of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has created artwork featuring the Guardian enemies from the previous game, but with a Zonai Constructs-style twist. Surprisingly, Guardians did not make an appearance in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Both Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild are renowned for their heightened difficulty compared to earlier 3D Zelda games. A significant factor contributing to this challenge is the presence of formidable enemies scattered throughout the expansive open-world map. While Tears of the Kingdom features formidable adversaries such as Gleeoks and Gloom Hands, Breath of the Wild introduces Guardians as a more common and arguably more terrifying foe. These statuesque spider-like robots possess an uncanny ability to detect Link from afar, inflicting substantial damage with pinpoint accuracy using their laser beams, and exhibiting deceptively swift movements. The eerie and distorted piano jingle that resonates when they appear only adds to the tension. However, they can be defeated using Ancient Arrows, the Master Sword, or by deflecting their own laser attacks.
Despite this, one Reddit user named Altoost expressed their longing for the Guardians and took it upon themselves to share fan art depicting what the Guardians might look like in the style of Tears of the Kingdom's Zonai Constructs. Specifically, they drew inspiration from the benevolent Constructs that provide Link with gameplay advice, enhance battery life for vehicles and devices, and offer Zonai Charges or blueprints in the Depths. If these Constructs existed in-game, they would likely function as mini-bosses.
Many commenters praised the design, noting how well it blended with the style of the Constructs. Some speculated on whether these new Guardians would be as fearsome or challenging to defeat as the ones in the previous game. Others agreed, reminiscing about the enjoyment of battling Guardians in the past and expressing their desire for their return in Tears of the Kingdom, with a few hoping for their appearance in a DLC. Some even suggested incorporating Gloom into the design to enhance its intimidation factor.
Video game enthusiasts excel in speculating and generating innovative concepts. Although game companies cannot officially accept fan ideas due to legal restrictions, it is highly probable that Tears of the Kingdom will introduce downloadable content in the future. Considering its strong connection to Breath of the Wild, it is likely that Guardians will receive a reference or cameo. However, the ultimate outcome will only become apparent with time.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom can be played on the Nintendo Switch.
