The fantasy world of Solo Leveling introduces captivating concepts that captivate viewers until the very end. With powerful abilities held by Hunters and formidable Magic Beasts, Chugong's work is presented in a stunning manner.
After much anticipation, Solo Leveling episode 1 finally aired on January 6, 2024, and it certainly lived up to the hype. The episode effectively sets the stage by introducing the Gate, Hunters, Dungeons, and the Magic Beasts within them. This article will explore the origins and nature of dungeons.
Solo Leveling: Dungeons, explained
Sung Jin-Woo and his group, under the leadership of D-rank Hunter Song Chi-Yul, entered a dungeon of similar rank. After clearing the initial area, they stumbled upon a secret passage in the Cartenon Temple, leading them down a new path. But what are dungeons, exactly?
A decade ago, Gates began appearing worldwide, linking the human world to the realm of monsters. Dungeons are chaotic pockets that connect these worlds through these Gates. Typically, they house a horde of monsters, overseen by a boss, and remain open until the boss is vanquished.

After defeating the boss, the dungeon will remain accessible for approximately an hour before closing automatically. However, dungeons have a time limit - they must be cleared within 7 days of opening.
If this is not done, it will result in a "Dungeon Break", where the creatures within the dungeon can enter the human realm and cause chaos. In addition, dungeons are categorized into ranks similar to Hunters, ranging from Rank A to E, with S being the highest.
Essence Stones, obtained after defeating formidable creatures, can be utilized to create potent weapons and equipment. Mana Crystals obtained from dungeons are akin to Essence Stones but are slightly less powerful. In essence, the loot from dungeons aids in acquiring stronger weapons, enabling Hunters to combat higher-ranked creatures.
What happened in the Cartenon Temple?

At first, it seemed like a simple raid on a D-rank Dungeon for Sung Jin-Woo and the group. However, things took a turn for the worse when they stumbled upon a hidden path and found themselves in a chamber filled with towering stone statues and the ancient 10 commandments of the Cartenon Temple.
Their plight only worsened when one of the group attempted to flee, only to be swiftly struck down by a statue near the exit, which mercilessly cleaved the Hunter in two.
In conclusion
The focal point of the chamber was the imposing Statue of a Deity or Ruler of the Temple. As desperate attempts were made to flee, the Divine Statue unleashed beams from its eyes, reducing the escaping Hunters to ashes.
Solo Leveling has made a huge impact in the anime world, with its anime adaptation of the popular Webtoon/Manhwa generating a lot of excitement since it was announced in 2022. Now, in 2024, the numbers speak for themselves as the series has finally premiered. While it shares similarities with Isekai anime, Solo Leveling offers a unique take on the genre with its Hunter concept and their abilities. With episode 2 on the horizon, fans are eagerly anticipating what's to come.
Editor's P/S
As a passionate fan of Solo Leveling, I am thrilled to see the anime adaptation finally come to life. The first episode did an excellent job of setting the stage and introducing the key concepts of the series, including the Gates, Hunters, Dungeons, and Magic Beasts. The animation is stunning, and the voice acting is top-notch. I can't wait to see how the story unfolds in the coming episodes.
One of the things I love most about Solo Leveling is the way it subverts expectations. The first episode seems like a fairly standard dungeon raid, but it quickly takes a dark and unexpected turn. The Hunters are faced with a powerful and deadly enemy, and they must use all of their skills and abilities to survive. The sense of danger and urgency is palpable, and it makes for some truly edge-of-your-seat viewing.
