The highly-anticipated anime adaptation of the immensely popular web novel and webtoon Solo Leveling has finally confirmed its release window, treating fans to two exciting trailers and captivating key visuals that introduce the series' main characters.
On March 21, 2023, the official social media accounts of the upcoming Solo Leveling anime announced that the series will make its debut in the upcoming winter season. Adding to the excitement, the first teaser trailer was released, offering a glimpse of the protagonist, Sung Jin-woo (renamed Mizushino Shun in this adaptation), as he undergoes the pivotal and life-changing events that propel the story forward. Accompanying the teaser trailer is a striking key visual depicting Shun lying on a stone altar, bloodied and wounded. The talented team behind the anime includes director Shunsuke Nakashige, head writer Noboru Kimura, character designer Tomoko Sudo, and music composer Hiroyuki Sawano. Additionally, during Anime Expo 2023, a second trailer was unveiled, introducing more of the characters who will play a part in Sung Jin-woo/Mizushino Shun's extraordinary journey.
Solo Leveling's First Trailers Showcases Its Charismatic Protagonist
Solo Leveling originated as a web novel authored by Chugong and serialized by Kakao, a South Korean internet company, on its digital comic and fiction platform KakaoPage from July 2016. In 2018, a webtoon adaptation of the series was introduced, written by Chugong and illustrated by Jang Sung-Rak (aka Dubu), who sadly passed away in 2022. The narrative revolves around Sung Jin-woo, the least powerful among the "hunters," a group of humans endowed with supernatural abilities that they employ to hunt down monsters. Following a disastrous raid in a dungeon, Sung Jin-woo is selected by a mysterious program called the System to be its sole participant. Similar to other isekai series like That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime, the System bestows upon Jin-woo extraordinary abilities, primarily enabling him to exponentially enhance his power, thus establishing him as the most formidable hunter in the world.
While seemingly a classic isekai on the surface, Solo Leveling distinguishes itself with standout elements that contribute to its incredible success. Firstly, the astonishing artwork by Dubu captivates readers, drawing them in. Secondly, Jin-woo possesses a unique power known as "necromancy," allowing him to transform those he kills into loyal minions, forming his own party and entourage of defeated enemies, known as "shadows." Additionally, Jin-woo establishes the early standard for the popular archetype of the cold and emotionless main character. Lastly, Solo Leveling defies classification as a traditional isekai, as the protagonist does not get spirited away to another world, but instead acquires and utilizes his special powers in his existing fantasy-based world.
