Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV delves into the reasons behind actress Amanda Bynes and producer Dan Schneider ending their working relationship.
The docuseries by Investigation Discovery is set to premiere on Sunday, March 17, and Monday, March 18. It includes interviews with past Nickelodeon cast and crew members discussing Bynes and Schneider's professional collaboration.
Schneider, who is 58 years old, first discovered Bynes, who is now 37, while she was performing at the Los Angeles Laugh Factory as a child. This discovery eventually led to Bynes appearing on All That and later starring in her own sketch series, The Amanda Show.
Director Virgil L. Fabian, who worked with Schneider on several projects, mentioned in a docuseries that Schneider immediately recognized Bynes' potential to become a star. Despite Schneider playing a key role in Bynes' career success, the two eventually went their separate ways when Bynes transitioned to more mature projects.
Bynes has faced mental health challenges since rising to fame in the early 2000s. In August 2013, due to a series of mental health and substance abuse issues, she was placed under a temporary conservatorship. Her mother took charge of Bynes' health care and personal matters.
In 2022, Bynes filed a petition to end her conservatorship, asserting in a mental capacity declaration that she is capable of managing her own affairs. A month later, a judge granted her request to terminate the conservatorship. Despite this, Bynes' personal struggles continued to unfold in the public eye.
In March 2023, Bynes was placed on a 72-hour psychiatric hold after seeking help for a reported psychotic episode. A mental health team assessed her and decided to put her on a 5150 psychiatric hold. This hold allows individuals facing a health crisis to be detained for three days if there is a potential risk of self-harm, harm to others, or severe disability.
Three months later, Bynes was detained by the police for a mental health evaluation. She made a comeback to the public eye with a podcast called “Amanda Bynes & Paul Sieminski: The Podcast” last year, but it seems to have been canceled after just one episode. Recently, Bynes shared on Instagram that she plans to take a board exam to become a licensed manicurist.
Schneider, on the other hand, shared a statement via a spokesperson before the docuseries aired.
According to the spokesperson, Dan deeply cared for the kids on his shows, even when their own families were not as supportive. He empathized with their struggles and always stood up for them. Many of these kids were forced to be the primary breadwinners for their families, facing immense pressure as a result.
Growing up under the spotlight while juggling school and a demanding job was no easy feat for these young actors. That's why there are strict standards in place, with executives, lawyers, teachers, and parents constantly present on set. Despite these measures, being a child actor was still incredibly challenging, and Dan understood this better than anyone.

The Early Days

Bynes joined the cast of All That in the late ’90s, where she portrayed different characters over four seasons. One of her co-stars, Leon Frierson, noted that producer Dan Schneider clearly favored Bynes during their time on set.
"We had to go to school on set and sometimes Amanda would be missing," he shared in the docuseries. "We often heard she was with Dan, brainstorming ideas and writing. We witnessed their bond grow stronger on set."
Underage actors had to have a parent or guardian with them on set at all times. Frierson, who is now 37 years old, mentioned that Bynes' father was always there when she was filming scenes for All That.
Her Own Show
When it came to parents on All That, they made an effort to stay in the background. However, Amanda Bynes' parents took a more active role in her career, especially her dad. His involvement was notable, particularly in his connection with Dan Schneider. Together, they strategically shaped Amanda's career, which many of the cast members admired.

After finding success on All That, Bynes and Schneider continued to work together on The Amanda Show. Culture writer Scaachi Koul commented on their strong bond, noting that "Dan Schneider played a significant role in Amanda Bynes' career and they had a close relationship. She really trusted him."
On the other hand, Virgil L. Fabian had fond memories of watching Bynes and Schneider collaborate. "I have vivid memories of Dan and Amanda Bynes being very close during The Amanda Show," he recalled. "Not many people could make Dan laugh, but she definitely could. She would always come up with funny things during rehearsals."
In a different interview, Karyn Finley Thompson, the editor of All That, shared her thoughts on the interactions between Bynes and Schneider.
Thompson mentioned, "I noticed Amanda being physically close to Dan. I saw her hugging him from behind or giving him a neck massage. They had a close relationship, and I didn't think anything of it."
Thompson thought a sketch from The Amanda Show, featuring Schneider and Bynes in a hot tub, was "a little odd."
A source close to Schneider had mentioned the massage allegations, stating to Insider in 2022, "[Schneider] regrets asking anyone for a massage and acknowledges it was not appropriate, even if it occurred in public settings."
(Bynes’ rep had no comment about the claims made in Quiet on Set.)

Bynes began her acting career in 2002 with the film Big Fat Liar. As she gained more experience, she started landing roles in more mature projects. One of her notable roles was as the lead in the WB sitcom What I Like About You, where she starred alongside Jennie Garth from 2002 to 2006.
Behind the scenes, Schneider worked as a co-creator on the sitcom with Wil Calhoun. According to Koul and Taylor, the issues on set began early on in the show's production.
Taylor revealed in a confessional that there was constant conflict between Dan and the co-creator of What I Like About You. The network had a lack of trust in Dan, leading to a tense atmosphere.
On the other hand, Rick Ellis from All Your Screens mentioned that the network intervened and Dan was eventually removed from the writers' room. In response, Dan stated that he had to shift his focus to another show he was developing, which resulted in his reduced involvement in What I Like About You in the later seasons.
The Start of the End

Fabian talked about the challenges Bynes and her parents faced as she grew older. He mentioned that Bynes wanted to be independent but still lived with her parents, so there were some rules in place. The director also noted that Bynes was in a relationship with an older man, which her parents did not approve of at that time.
Taylor learned from sources about a situation involving Bynes’ parents and Schneider. According to Taylor, Bynes attempted to leave home and sought help from Dan. It is unclear about the specifics, but it is known that the police got involved. Bynes' parents were reportedly unhappy with Dan's involvement. Surprisingly, Bynes then sought emancipation with the help of Dan and other representatives to gain more independence, catching her parents off guard.
Taylor suggested that the situation between Bynes and Schneider was filled with ethical concerns, leading to their eventual falling out. He mentioned that while some may argue that Schneider was attempting to assist Amanda, the outcome was not favorable. This resulted in a legal battle that caused a significant rift between Amanda's parents and Dan Schneider.
Koul also shared her perspective on the controversy. She stated that this marked the end of Schneider's relationship with Amanda. Koul noted that Schneider decided to part ways with What I Like About You and remained connected to the show in name only.
