Following Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's release, a new theory has emerged surrounding the origin story of Spider-Punk. The sequel, much like its predecessor, introduced several new Spider-Man variations, including Hobie Brown (voiced by Daniel Kaluuya), a.k.a. Spider-Punk. However, an observation made by Twitter user @lighthawkhebi has sparked interesting theories about the character's backstory. As Hobie's origins aren't fully explained in the movie, the theory delves into the possibility of Spider-Punk being responsible for the death of a police captain on his Earth.
How This Spider-Punk Origin Story Theory Differs From The Comics
Spider-Punk's origin story in the comics is more fleshed out than in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and while he has taken lives in the books, he has never killed a police officer. In fact, he has even killed Norman Osborn, a political figure who was a tyrannical president in his universe. The theory that Spider-Punk may have killed Captain Stacy or Jefferson Morales on his own world has some validity, and if true, it could lead to a greater conflict for Gwen and/or Miles in the sequel. Hobie, who plays Spider-Punk, is already a reserved character in the first movie, and there may be a reason for his reluctance to talk about his past.
There is potential for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse to explore this detail more, or it may be reserved for a Spider-Punk spinoff project in the future. Spider-Punk has gained popularity among fans as one of the new Spider-Man variations, making it possible for Sony to consider a spinoff for him down the line. In the meantime, fans can enjoy watching Spider-Punk in theaters as part of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
