Warning! This article contains spoilers for Ahsoka episode 5.
Summary
Ahsoka's original Clone Wars costume has faced criticism for being impractical and unsuitable for her age. However, the Tales of the Jedi series has begun to retcon her outfit, offering a more practical and comfortable fighting attire.
Ahsoka episode 5 showcases her wearing the retconned outfit, solidifying the change and highlighting her youthful presence during the Clone Wars era.
Star Wars has accomplished a remarkable retcon of Ahsoka Tano in Ahsoka after a 15-year wait, and in the most impressive manner. Ahsoka has rightfully earned her own Star Wars series as one of the franchise's beloved and significant characters. Despite not appearing in live-action until The Mandalorian season 2 in 2020, Ahsoka's connection to the Skywalker saga as Anakin Skywalker's apprentice has always been profound. Although Ahsoka now receives abundant love and appreciation, it was not always the case.
Ahsoka received a lot of criticism when she first debuted in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie and subsequent animated series. Being a young character, she exhibited the typical attitude of a blossoming teenager, often clashing with Anakin Skywalker. Over time, subtle improvements have transformed Ahsoka into the beloved and iconic character she is today, especially as the generation that grew up with the prequel Star Wars trilogy continues to mature. However, the original costume she wore during seasons 1 and 2 of The Clone Wars has always been a major point of criticism. Now, even after more than a decade, Star Wars is taking steps to address this issue.
Ahsoka Tano's Original Clone Wars Costume Was Always Problematic
Tales Of The Jedi Began Retconning The Clone Wars Costume Out Of Existence
From her early days battling in The Clone Wars, Ahsoka was clad in a tube top that was far from ideal for the demanding conflicts she faced. Many criticized this outfit as inappropriate for someone of her age, particularly as she leaped between war-zones. With the transition to live-action, the glaring flaws of this attire would have become more pronounced. It is already distressing enough that Ahsoka had to engage in the Clone Wars at such a tender age, but forcing her into an uncomfortable and ill-suited garb only adds to the predicament.
In 2022, Tales of the Jedi introduced a revamped version of Ahsoka's original costume from The Clone Wars. The new outfit reflects Ahsoka's personal style and is more practical for combat. Drawing inspiration from her later appearances in The Clone Wars, it retains elements of the original design while enhancing protection and comfort. This updated attire proved invaluable to Ahsoka during her training under Anakin, where she relentlessly practiced deflecting blaster bolts from the clones. It also marked a significant milestone in the ongoing evolution of Star Wars.
Ahsoka Episode 5 Completes The Costume Retcon
In Ahsoka episode 5, young Ahsoka makes her live-action debut as she relives memories of the Clone Wars. During one of her earliest missions, Ahsoka is seen wearing the same outfit as she did in Tales of the Jedi, rather than her attire from The Clone Wars. This change in the live-action adaptation solidifies the retcon, which is actually an improvement. Ahsoka's appearance reminds viewers of how young she was during the Clone Wars era, and it would have been jarring to see her in her original outfit. Instead, her attire in this episode serves as a foreshadowing of what's to come and takes inspiration from her master's clothing.
This series also introduces another costume retcon: Ahsoka the White, who previously appeared in the Star Wars Rebels epilogue. In Ahsoka episode 5, she transitions from Ahsoka the Gray to Ahsoka the White. Through a connection with her former master in the World Between Worlds, Ahsoka is able to gain closure and receive the remaining training she needs to progress. These revisions to her costumes enhance Ahsoka's narrative and will continue to be iconic aspects of her character's legacy as her story unfolds in Ahsoka and beyond.
Ahsoka releases new episodes Tuesdays at 6 pm PT / 9 pm ET on Disney+.
