The temples in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom provide a slightly more linear experience compared to the rest of the game. However, the Water Temple stands out as an exception, offering a unique level of freedom not found in the other temples.
The Water Temple Allows Players to Get Creative
The main story quest for Tears of the Kingdom involves obtaining the Zora Armor to swim up the waterfalls leading to the Water Temple. However, it is worth noting that the Zora Armor is not strictly necessary for this task. Alternatively, players can use vehicles, provided they have enough Zonai Batteries.
This versatility also applies to navigating the platforms beneath the Water Temple. The traversal in this section is particularly impressive due to the presence of multiple waterfalls that can be scaled using the Zora Armor. Additionally, the platforms themselves are compact, with minimal space between them. This allows players to attempt daring jumps or drop Zonai Platforms to gain unconventional vantage points, either to gain the upper hand on enemies or avoid them altogether.
This flexibility even extends to entering the Water Temple itself. While most players would enter through the front entrance, it is equally viable to enter from the lower level. This alternative approach may provide players with a different initial impression of the temple, as they discover creative paths that the developers may not have originally intended.
The level of flexibility in the temple extends to the puzzles themselves, offering various options for completion. Players can choose to utilize the giant bubbles at specific points to access certain areas, or use Link's platforming abilities to traverse any surface. Additionally, players can construct a simple contraption with Zonai Devices to overcome traversal challenges.
Even the puzzles within the Water Temple can be approached in creative ways, allowing players to avoid feeling rushed. For example, one puzzle requires draining a pool of water to access a ball that needs to be dropped into a slot, opening a gate. Some players may choose to use the Rewind ability to continuously flood the pool and keep the gate open, while others may connect nearby platforms to keep it suspended as long as the Zonai Battery remains charged. A more permanent solution involves attaching the platforms to both ends, effectively suspending the gate and allowing players to reach their destination without any time constraints.
In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, players can discover that even the temple's boss can be easily defeated with the help of a hydrant, proving that there are alternative and more efficient methods than relying solely on Sidon's ability. This humorous revelation highlights the game's ability to approach pivotal moments in a unique way. Despite the generally linear nature of many of the temples, the Water Temple stands out by showcasing that even if a method of reaching a certain place or solving a puzzle may seem impractical or unintended by the developers, it is still considered a valid and legitimate way to play the game.
