Highlights
The upcoming release of Omni-Man as Mortal Kombat 1's DLC character is scheduled for next month. The reveal trailer showcases the impressive dedication of NetherRealm Studios in crafting a faithful rendition of the renowned character from Invincible.
The trailer is packed with nods and hidden surprises from the animated series, featuring Omni-Man's deadly actions such as crushing heads and a tense subway encounter. The meticulousness in portraying these iconic scenes indicates that Omni-Man's gameplay will truly embody his character. Fans can anticipate the same level of dedication and precision for upcoming DLC characters, Homelander and Peacemaker, which will include their animations, movesets, and faithful adaptation from the source material.
Mortal Kombat 1 has experienced a successful few weeks since its impressive release a month ago. Critics have given it positive reviews, but ultimately, it's the fans who determine the success of a fighting game. Fortunately, most fans are enjoying what Mortal Kombat 1 has to offer. However, the current meta of Mortal Kombat 1 could use some variety. Facing off against Scorpion, Smoke, and Raiden repeatedly can become monotonous.
Luckily, players will soon have a shake-up in the form of Mortal Kombat 1's first DLC character, set to be released next month. While beloved characters like Quan Chi and Ermac are expected to be added to the roster, it's the introduction of Invincible's Omni-Man that will come first. Based on the recent reveal trailer, it seems that Mortal Kombat 1's guest characters may be some of the franchise's best, even surpassing The Boys' Homelander.
Mortal Kombat 1's Omni-Man Is Setting the Bar High for Homelander
Just released at New York Comic Con, Mortal Kombat 1's Omni-Man reveal trailer proves that NetherRealm Studios has done justice to the character. The trailer immediately showcases the dedication and effort put into Mortal Kombat 1's guest characters, particularly through J.K. Simmons' powerful voice. Throughout the rest of the trailer, there are numerous references and Easter eggs to Omni-Man's appearance in Invincible. The teaser reveals two Fatalities for Omni-Man, including a head squeeze that faithfully recreates a scene from the animated show. Another iconic moment from the show is replicated as Omni-Man slams Scorpion into an oncoming train in a subway tunnel. Even Omni-Man's Fatal Blow pays homage to the source material, featuring the comic villain brutally pummeling his opponent and crushing their skull with a double-fist punch.
However, capturing the essence of Omni-Man in the moment-to-moment gameplay of Mortal Kombat 1 is a much more challenging task for NetherRealm. From the glimpses revealed so far, it appears that they have done an excellent job. J.K. Simmons' voice performance, Omni-Man's swift parry that allows him to swiftly move around the Earth and strike his opponent within seconds, and even the way he carries himself and hovers above the battlefield demonstrate NetherRealm's understanding of not only the character's traits but also the desires of the fans in a fighting game.
If we judge by Omni-Man's reveal trailer for Mortal Kombat 1, it is reasonable to assume that Homelander and Peacemaker will also receive the same level of attention and care, catering to the fans. It is highly likely that we will witness some of their most iconic moments transformed into Fatalities and Fatal Blows. Additionally, their overall demeanor, animations, and moveset will likely remain faithful and authentic to the source material. John Cena will reprise his role as Peacemaker in Mortal Kombat 1, while it remains uncertain whether Antony Starr will be featured in the game. Nonetheless, it seems highly probable that NetherRealm is making efforts to bring him on board.
Mortal Kombat 1 is available now for PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
