At Summer Game Fest, Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon delved into the workings of the new Kameo fighters in Mortal Kombat 1. This highly anticipated installment in the Mortal Kombat franchise resets the timeline to a peaceful world created by Fire God Liu Kang. However, this newfound tranquility is short-lived as the returning Shang Tsung threatens EarthRealm once again. Among the changes that Mortal Kombat 1 brings to the series is the introduction of Kameo Fighters, a set of supporting characters that can be called upon by players during combat. Despite initial lack of detail, fans now have a better understanding of how this exciting new feature will affect gameplay.
During the Summer Game Fest 2023 livestream, Mortal Kombat 1 was one of the first games showcased, featuring a new gameplay trailer that delved into the game's storyline, roster, and Fatalities. Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon joined host Geoff Keighley on stage to provide more insights and information about the upcoming reboot. Boon revealed that players can now select a Kameo Fighter from a secondary roster after choosing their main pick, giving them access to a classic fighter's moveset and allowing them to mix and match the skills of two different Kombatants.
Boon also detailed how players will be able to summon Kameo Fighters with a single button press and perform different attacks depending on the direction they push while calling out their partner. Combining moves with the main fighter is also possible, but there is a meter limiting how often players can call upon their Kameo Fighters, making it a strategic choice for players to make.
The Kameo Fighter options in Mortal Kombat 1 will offer players a chance to mix and match warriors from the series' past timelines. Boon revealed that classic Kombatants like Sub-Zero, Kano, and Sonya Blade will be included, with their older incarnations from the original Mortal Kombat. This means that players can combine the rebooted version of Sub-Zero with his younger self, for example. Additionally, Boon teased that the Kameo roster will include some surprises for fans, adding to the excitement of the game's new direction. Overall, Mortal Kombat 1's Kameo Fighter system will provide players with more options for customizing their playstyle.
Mortal Kombat 1 launches September 19 for PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X.
