Ed Boon, the creative mind behind NetherRealm, recently suggested that Injustice 3 may be in the works following the release of Mortal Kombat 1 later this year. In 2013, NetherRealm fused the beloved 2D gameplay of Mortal Kombat with the beloved heroes and villains from DC Comics to create Injustice: Gods Among Us, after first experimenting with the concept in Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe in 2008. The original Injustice game was set in an alternate timeline where Superman becomes corrupt after the tragic loss of Lois Lane and their unborn child. It was followed by a sequel, a line of spin-off comics, and an animated film adaptation. Despite fans eagerly anticipating more Injustice content, NetherRealm announced that they were instead developing the next Mortal Kombat game, leaving some fans disappointed that a new Injustice game wasn't on the horizon. Injustice 2's "bad" ending presented a chilling cliffhanger that could potentially set up the next chapter in this darker section of the DC universe.
NetherRealm's deconstructive comic-book fighting series, Injustice, may still have a chance for a comeback. Ed Boon, co-creator of Mortal Kombat, revealed in a recent appearance on The Jeff Gertsmann Show podcast that the studio plans to revisit Injustice after the release of Mortal Kombat 1. Boon explained that the delay in announcing Mortal Kombat 1 was due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He also mentioned that if NetherRealm had developed a new Injustice game before Mortal Kombat 1, it would have resulted in a seven-year gap between Mortal Kombat games. Therefore, the studio decided to prioritize Mortal Kombat 1 to showcase what it can achieve with the Unreal Engine 4.
NetherRealm has confirmed plans to develop a new Injustice game, but not immediately after the release of Mortal Kombat 1 in September. The studio intends to support the latest fighting game for a while after its release. However, leaked details suggest that playable guest characters in the form of Invincible villain Omni-Man and The Boys' villain Homelander, who are similar to the Injustice version of Superman, could pave the way for the next Injustice game. Although the release date for Injustice 3 is still unclear, Ed Boon has stated that NetherRealm will eventually return to their twisted DC universe.
Injustice 3 is rumored to be in development.
