With the success of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and its captivating building mechanics, the argument for a LEGO Zelda game is strong. The latest installment in The Legend of Zelda series offers an engrossing storyline, a vast open-world Hyrule, and innovative tools.
Tears of the Kingdom brings players back to a familiar Hyrule with a twist. While the game’s open world initially resembles the cherished Hyrule from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, its new mechanics, sky and depths maps, and side quests breathe new life into the adventure. Among these features, it is the building mechanics that champion the case for a LEGO project centered around the Zelda franchise.
Building LEGO Hyrule
The new building mechanics and abilities in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom would be a perfect fit for a LEGO Zelda title. While FromSoftware's 3D Dot Game Heroes did a good job replicating some of the classic Zelda elements in a blocky format, a LEGO game with Tears of the Kingdom's toolkit would offer a more personalized and immersive experience. In the latest Zelda game, players are given six abilities to play with: Recall, Ultrahand, Fuse, Ascend, Autobuild, and Camera. Each of these abilities enhances the overall gameplay, allowing players to truly customize their experience. They provide creative options so that players of all types can enjoy the game's versatile design, but a LEGO spin-off could offer even more freedom.
The Fuse and Ultrahand abilities would be crucial for a LEGO Zelda game. Ultrahand would enable players to manipulate and carefully stack LEGO blocks, while the Tears of the Kingdom ability would add a level of precision in stacking the virtual LEGOs based on their brick-and-knob connections. However, the true star of the game would be the Fuse ability, which would allow these blocks to be connected to weapons, shields, and each other beyond their basic connections.
Tears of the Kingdom's Recall ability would bring immense delight to a LEGO Hyrule setting. The possibility of rewinding LEGO block structures and manipulating the timing of their fall physics presents an opportunity for truly inventive game design. While a LEGO Zelda game has the potential to elevate Tears of the Kingdom's Recall, incorporating Fuse and Ultrahand as well, it is worth considering the other abilities.
Implementing the Ascend ability in a player-created Hyrule may prove challenging, but it could pave the way for developers to devise new approaches to dungeons or shrines within a LEGO environment. Ascend has the potential to introduce greater verticality to the blocky world, surpassing the levels seen in 3D Dot Game Heroes. It would creatively encourage players to move between LEGO levels, ascending and descending.
The most exciting aspect of LEGOs is the act of creating. Once players have constructed their ultimate vehicle or a replica of Hyrule Castle, the Autobuild feature becomes essential. This tool allows players to recreate their creations - whether it be a flying machine, castle, or even a robotic Ganondorf - countless times, eliminating the need to manually build each time.
Furthermore, no LEGO Zelda game would be complete without the inclusion of the Tears of the Kingdom's Camera feature. Within the LEGO setting, Zelda players can personalize their own version of Hyrule in numerous ways. They have the ability to build, create, and capture images for side quests, collectibles, and even share these pictures on social media platforms if Nintendo were to implement such a feature. This social aspect would inspire gamers to come up with innovative ways to invent and reinvent their virtual Hyrule. Additionally, a research side quest could encourage players to recreate their favorite levels or memorable moments from iconic Zelda games like Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, or Link's Awakening. With the Tears of the Kingdom toolkit, a LEGO game featuring Zelda would offer imaginative players limitless freedom to construct their dream Zelda experience, all while maintaining the charming LEGO aesthetic.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available now for Nintendo Switch.
