The release of Patch 6.45 for Final Fantasy 14 brought a range of updates to the game's unique Blue Mage job. These updates included new spells, quests, and an expanded level cap. Blue Mages acquire spells by defeating specific enemies throughout the game, a feature inspired by previous Blue Mages in the Final Fantasy series.
With the introduction of Patch 6.45, Blue Mages now have access to 20 additional spells, bringing the total number of spells they can learn to an impressive 124. However, they can only equip 24 spells at a time. In order to overcome challenging solo content like the Masked Carnivale, Blue Mage players must carefully choose the most advantageous spells and abilities from their repertoire. This guide focuses on teaching Blue Mages how to acquire Schiltron, a powerful new counterattack ability, in Final Fantasy 14.
How to Learn Schiltron in Final Fantasy 14
Schiltron is a new addition to the Blue Mage's tanking abilities in Patch 6.45. This one-star spell allows the Blue Mage to automatically counterattack whenever they are hit with physical damage. When combined with Aetheric Mimicry: Tank, this ability becomes even more powerful and is useful for generating enmity.
Schiltron is spell number 107 out of 124 in the Blue Mage's spellbook. Unlike many other Blue Mage spells that require completing quests or defeating challenging enemies, Schiltron can be unlocked by defeating a simple overworld foe called the Long-Tailed Armadillo. These creatures can be found in the southernmost part of Amh Araeng, a desert region in Norvrandt, specifically in The Southern Hills of Amber.
Players must learn Schiltron before they can proceed in the new Blue Mage quest series added in 6.45.
Where to Find Long-Tailed Armadillo
To locate Long-Tailed Armadillos in the Southern Hills of Amber within Amh Araeng, the most efficient approach is to teleport to the Aetheryte at Twine and proceed southward without deviation.
The player will eventually arrive at Ladle, a familiar location from the Shadowbringers' Main Story Quest, "The Trolley Problem." There, players can encounter several Long-Tailed Armadillos located at coordinates (X: 15.2, Y: 30.8, Z: 0.5). These fierce level 77 creatures could pose a threat to lower-level Blue Mages, who may benefit from bringing allies along to vanquish them.
To acquire a spell as a Blue Mage, it is essential that the creature unleashes the spell before succumbing to defeat. Consequently, players must exercise patience and wait for the Long-Tailed Armadillo to cast Schiltron at least once prior to vanquishing it, ensuring the successful acquisition of the spell. Notably, the enemy deploys Schiltron when its health is depleted.
Final Fantasy 14 is currently accessible on PC, PS4, and PS5.
