Understanding Lightroots in Tears of the KingdomThe Depths in Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a massive underground world as big as the surface world of Hyrule, consisting of ruins, caves, and otherworldly landscapes. However, navigating this vast system can be a challenge as it is dark, and Link cannot see much when he first enters. To address this issue, the game introduces a mechanic called Lightroots. Want to know how Lightroots work and how many of them are present in the game? Keep reading.
Lightroots are strategically placed waypoints that, when interacted with, reveal a small section of the underground map in the Depths. Spread out intermittently, these convenient markers ensure that Link always has a nearby point of reference to navigate from. To help illuminate players' exploration of the Depths of Hyrule, this guide will provide a comprehensive overview of everything they need to know about Lightroots.
Every Lightroot in Tears of the Kingdom
To collect all the Lightroots in Tears of the Kingdom, Link must explore every corner of the Depths. The above image shows the extensive area that needs to be covered.
How Many Lightroots Are In Tears of the Kingdom?
Throughout the Depths of Tears of the Kingdom, there are a total of 120 Lightroots to be found. Initially, Link may perceive their placement to be arbitrary, but as he delves deeper, a correlation between the positioning of shrines on the surface and Lightroots in the Depths becomes apparent. Remarkably, each of the 120 Lightroots corresponds precisely with a shrine on the surface.
To assist Link in finding Lightroots, it is recommended to check the surface for any of TotK's shrines that are not aligned with their corresponding Lightroot. This approach can also be used to locate any missing surface shrines.
How Do Lightroots Work?
When Link comes across a Lightroot, whether he uses a specific method to locate it or discovers it during exploration, the interaction process remains the same. Upon spotting the distinct orange hue emanating from the Lightroot, he must make his way to the bottom of the large, orange "core." Here, he will find the familiar Zonai green-hand prompt overhead, as shown in
Once Link comes into contact with the Lightroot, a cutscene will initiate, showcasing the Lightroot's functionality. As the light travels through the roots, Link can then utilize his Purah Pad to access the Depths' map. The extent of the map that each Lightroot reveals can greatly vary, with some exposing vast areas of the map and others only revealing a small section of their immediate surroundings.
After the map is fully revealed, the Lightroot will restore any hearts of Link that have been corrupted by Gloom. However, Link will still need to replenish his hearts through food or rest as the process only restores them to their original state. Additionally, completing the Lightroot will grant Link the advantage of using it as a quick-travel portal throughout Tears of the Kingdom.
Dispelling Darkness Medal:
Upon finishing all 120 Lightroots in Tears of the Kingdom, Link is rewarded with the Dispelling Darkness Medal. Although it seems to have no practical purpose, it serves as a symbol of achievement and accomplishment for Link. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom can be played on Nintendo Switch.
