The Old Gods in World of Warcraft are mysterious and horrifying antagonists who have a lingering influence on the game's world.
The Old Gods' primary objective is to corrupt the World Soul of Azeroth, resulting in widespread chaos and destruction across the universe. In an alternative reality within World of Warcraft: Dragonflight, where the Old Gods remained unconquered, players would experience a dreadful existence dominated by the forces of the Void.
The Old Gods, notorious antagonists in World of Warcraft, embody mystery and horror within the game's fantasy world. Despite being major characters throughout various expansions, little is known about these enigmatic creatures. However, World of Warcraft: Dragonflight sheds some light on them.
Although the four currently known Old Gods have been defeated, their influence persists. The prophecies they whispered have largely been realized, but only after years of speculation. Players are aware that they must stay vigilant against the agents of the Void, as the consumption of Azeroth by these beings would mean utter destruction.
Azeroth's World Soul Makes It Vulnerable to World of Warcraft's Old Gods
The Old Gods have existed in World of Warcraft since its beginning and are often depicted as colossal, all-knowing creatures adorned with numerous eyes, teeth, and tentacles. Their very essence is designed to drive mortals to madness, furthering their sinister ambitions. While players once remained uncertain about the consequences of failing to eliminate Old Gods like C’Thun and Yogg-Saron, clarity eventually emerged.
For quite some time, players have been aware of the Black Empire, a distant era when Old Gods like N'Zoth freely propagated across the surface of Azeroth. They insidiously extended their tentacles, penetrating deep into the planet's crust, corrupting the land as void magic seeped into every crevice. Arriving on the scene, the Titans engaged in a fierce battle against these Old Gods, ultimately imprisoning them indefinitely. This act was carried out in order to safeguard the planet and, most importantly, preserve its World Soul - akin to a nascent Titan developing within its core.
Once this World Soul was discovered, the true intentions of the Old Gods became clear. The powers of the Void seek to manipulate this young entity for their own purposes. If they were to succeed in corrupting a Titan with the Void, it would plunge the universe into eternal chaos. Therefore, if the Old Gods were to revive the Black Empire and achieve their desires, all hope would be lost for the world of Azeroth.
In World of Warcraft: Dragonflight, players are granted the ability to witness alternate realities through an event known as a Time Rift. One of these realities depicts a world where the Black Empire remained unchallenged by the Titans. As expected, this realm mirrors the nightmarish domain of N'Zoth, known as Ny'alotha. Players ventured into this grotesque lair during the Battle for Azeroth and successfully defeated N'Zoth, albeit catching a glimpse of the Void's elaborate scheme before doing so.
If N'Zoth had his way, the entire planet would be engulfed in enormous tentacles, while countless eyes observed. Every living being would be corrupted, with sentient creatures either under mind control or driven insane. Azeroth's World Soul would be defenseless, succumbing to darkness and becoming, essentially, a god of chaos. Following this, the madness would spread beyond Azeroth, as this new Titan would conquer the universe in the name of the Void.
The existence of the Burning Legion is a direct response to the horror of this potential reality. Sargeras believed that even a lifeless universe would be preferable to one ruled by the Void, and all things considered, he was likely correct. Beyond this point, very little is known about the Void and its true masters, the Void Lords. All that has been disclosed thus far is that the Old Gods are their creations, and the sole means they possess to influence the known universe.
The Titans have made significant efforts to prevent the Void's threat, yet in recent times, mortals have taken up this responsibility. Despite the imperfect nature of the ancient warriors and magics left by the Titans on Azeroth, it is the planet's mortal heroes who consistently emerge victorious and save the day. Nevertheless, the baby Titan residing within Azeroth's core can find solace in the knowledge that she is securely shielded from any impending catastrophe.
