The official Ahsoka trailer suggests that Sabine, a Mandalorian and integral member of the Ghost crew in Star Wars Rebels, has undergone Jedi training and possesses the Force. However, not everything may be as it appears. Alongside Sabine, the Ghost crew also included two Jedi, Kanan Jarrus and his Padawan Ezra Bridger. Kanan sacrificed himself to save his friends, and Ezra disappeared after defeating the Imperial Grand Admiral Thrawn. Ahsoka Tano briefly joined the crew during Rebels, which is how she and Sabine met. Despite this connection, it remains unclear why Sabine refers to Ahsoka as "Master" in the trailer. Although Sabine received Ezra's lightsaber after his disappearance, there were no indications that she would follow a Jedi path. Nevertheless, it is plausible to consider another explanation.
Training As A Jedi Makes Sabine Feel Closer To Kanan And Ezra
It is possible that Sabine's connection to the Force could have been revealed. However, considering the significant amount of time she spent with multiple Jedi, it is quite surprising that none of them noticed until after Rebels ended. To make matters more puzzling, both Kanan and Ezra even trained Sabine in the use of the Darksaber - a lightsaber associated with the first Mandalorian Jedi - with the intention of her uniting her people. One would assume that during this training, at least one of them would have recognized Sabine's sensitivity to the Force. Instead, it is plausible that Sabine may have felt compelled to train with Ahsoka as a means of feeling closer to Kanan and Ezra after losing them both.
Kanan held a special place in Sabine's heart; she looked up to him, trusted him, and learned from him as if he were family. Ezra was not only her best friend, but their relationship may have even grown into something more, having grown up together during the war. Naturally, she would mourn their deaths and seek ways to cope with her grief while seeking a connection with them. Training with Ezra's lightsaber and emulating their fighting styles and thought processes could have provided her with a means to process her emotions. While Sabine always found solace in expressing herself through her art, there may have come a point where that was no longer enough to bring her comfort.
Sabine also possessed a tremendous sense of duty. Prior to joining the emerging Rebellion, she had designed perilous weapons for the Empire. Recognizing the value of Jedi within the Rebellion, Sabine aspired to train like one in order to provide the unique support that only Jedi were capable of offering. However, being a Jedi encompasses more than just harnessing the Force and utilizing a lightsaber. As Yoda states in the short story "What a Jedi Makes" by Michael Kogge in Stories of Jedi and Sith: "For though the Jedi and the Force are one, the Force is not what makes a Jedi." Being a Jedi involves adopting a certain mindset, embracing a philosophy, acknowledging a responsibility, and responding to a calling.
Ahsoka May Have Left Sabine's Training Because Of Her Attachments
In the second Ahsoka trailer, there is evidence of a rift between Sabine and Ahsoka. Ahsoka compares leaving Sabine to leaving her own master and describes Sabine as "stubborn." So, why did Ahsoka abandon Sabine during their training? The answer may lie in Ahsoka's live-action debut in The Mandalorian season 2. When Din Djarin is tasked with returning Grogu, a Jedi, to his people, he seeks help from Ahsoka, hoping she will train Grogu. However, Ahsoka declines. Although she never explicitly mentions her former master, Anakin Skywalker, it is clear that she is referring to him when she expresses concern that Grogu's strong bond with Din Djarin could lead him down a dangerous path - a path she is unwilling to take.
Given Ahsoka's firm refusal to train Grogu due to her concerns about his attachments and loneliness, it is possible that she had similar reservations about training Sabine. If Sabine desired to learn the ways of the Jedi in order to feel closer to Kanan and Ezra, Ahsoka may have noticed that her student struggled to let go of her grief for the fallen Jedi. Ahsoka was aware of Anakin's emotional connection to Padmé Amidala and correctly deduced that it played a part in his transformation into Darth Vader. If Ahsoka sensed a similar longing, grief, and worry in Sabine, she may have made the decision to leave during their training, even if Sabine lacked Force abilities.
In the trailer, Ahsoka states, "Sometimes we must prioritize what is right, regardless of our personal sentiments." This may allude to her seeking assistance from Sabine. While Ahsoka may have declined to continue training the young Mandalorian, she requires support and thus puts aside her fears and judgments for the greater good of the galaxy. The relationship between Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren will undoubtedly be a crucial aspect of the Ahsoka series, and it will be fascinating to observe how their dynamic unfolds, regardless of Sabine's possession of Force powers.
