Following the massive success of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which has already surpassed the box office earnings of its predecessor within just two weeks, Sony has released a new short film titled The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story. The movie centers around Miles Morales, who is voiced by Shameik Moore, as he navigates the challenges of balancing his responsibilities as Spider-Man with his high school and family life. Miles embarks on a journey through various dimensions in the Spider-Verse after jumping through a portal. Fans have been captivated by the stunning animation showcased in the film, which includes Gwen's watercolor world, a Davinci parchment Vulture, a LEGO Spider-Verse, and the intricate animation for Spider-Punk that took nearly three years to create.
A horror-themed short film titled The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story has been produced by Sony, featuring a runtime of under 7 minutes. The film premiered at the Annecy Film Festival this week, and follows Miles (voiced by Moore), who experiences anxiety while trying to balance his numerous responsibilities. The film offers viewers a glimpse into his subconscious, which is influenced by Jarelle Dampier's experiences with sleep paralysis.
As part of Sony Pictures Imageworks' LENS (Leading and Empowering New Storytellers) program, this short film was given the opportunity to be made by a high-potential candidate from an underrepresented group. Dampier's pitch was well-received, and although he did not work with Spider-Verse creators Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, they were impressed with the initial screening. The expansion of the Spider-Verse films to include smaller stories is a great way to showcase diverse voices in the industry. However, there is currently no information regarding when or where the short film will be released for fans to enjoy.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now playing in theaters.
