Members of the royal family have a long-standing tradition of attending the Wimbledon tennis championships in London every year. They always appear to thoroughly enjoy this annual sporting event, bringing joy to their faces. The British brood's involvement began in 1907 when King George V and Queen Mary made their first appearance at the oldest tennis tournament in the world. King George VI, Queen Elizabeth II's father, even tried his hand at competing in the 1926 Wimbledon championship, but unfortunately, he suffered a humiliating defeat in the first round and never participated again, as stated by author Bruce Tarran.
In 2017, Duchess Kate became the patron of the All England Club after Queen Elizabeth II stepped down following her 90th birthday. Queen Elizabeth had held the position since 1952.
In her role with Wimbledon, Kate is committed not only to attending the championships but also to making frequent visits to charities and sporting programs throughout the year that are backed by the organization.
Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, has held the position of president at the All England Club since 1969. Each year, he presents the winners of the tennis championships with their trophies at the end of the tournament.
Moreover, in Wimbledon 2018, it was the first time that Duchess Kate and Duchess Meghan attended an event together as sisters-in-law. This occurred two months after Duchess Meghan married Prince Harry in May of that same year. Tennis professional Serena Williams, who has a close friendship with Meghan, also attended Meghan and Harry's wedding.
