Following the events of Mortal Kombat 11's Aftermath DLC, Mortal Kombat 1 transports players back to the origins of the series. However, this time around, there are significant changes. Liu Kang, now both a fire god and a time god, has reconstructed the universe according to his preferences, introducing alterations to the course of events. Yet, the alterations to the story are not the only aspect shaking things up in Mortal Kombat 1.
From the glimpses of gameplay that fans have caught a glimpse of, Mortal Kombat 1 appears to have a roster that could spark controversy. While the exact number of playable fighters remains unknown, it appears that some beloved characters may have been sidelined in favor of the new Kameo Fighter system. However, there is still a possibility that they may be included in Mortal Kombat 1's DLC roster, alongside heavily rumored characters such as Omni-Man from the popular series Invincible.
Omni-Man's Potential Role in Mortal Kombat 1
Just a day prior to the official unveiling of Mortal Kombat 1, an online listing for the Premium Edition of the game appeared on Amazon Italy. This listing provided information about the contents of the Premium Edition, revealing that one of the rewards would be access to the first Kombat Pack. The Kombat Pack was said to feature six playable characters and five Kameo Fighters. Among these six playable characters were familiar Mortal Kombat staples such as Ermac and Quan Chi, as well as guest characters like Peacemaker, Homelander, and the highly anticipated inclusion of Omni-Man.
If Omni-Man does make an appearance in Mortal Kombat 1, fans can anticipate him being treated similarly to other guest characters like the Terminator, Rambo, and RoboCop. Like these characters, Omni-Man would likely have a distinct moveset inspired by his source material, including potentially devastating special moves like a brutal overhead ground pound. It is also possible that Omni-Man would have his own set of voice lines, and there is hope that NetherRealm Studios could secure J.K. Simmons to reprise his role from the animated show. Going above and beyond, NetherRealm could even give Omni-Man unique voice lines for each potential opponent, as seen with past guest characters in the Mortal Kombat series. However, since Omni-Man would be introduced after the game's initial launch, players should not expect to see him play a significant role in the main story mode, as guest characters typically have limited involvement in the series' narrative.
Mortal Kombat 1 will be released on September 19, 2023, for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
