In the upcoming Disney+ series Star Wars: The Acolyte, numerous Jedi characters will make appearances, albeit with a different role. Set in the final years of The High Republic era, The Acolyte takes place more than a century before the events of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, featuring Jedi from books and video games who have been underappreciated and overlooked in the Star Wars universe.
Interestingly, the Jedi characters in The Acolyte will not all be portrayed as heroes. Showrunner Leslye Headland revealed in an interview with Dagobah Dispatch that the Jedi will not be the central heroes of the story. Her statement is as follows:
The Acolyte takes a different approach by exploring morally-ambiguous characters within the Jedi, challenging the notion of them being the epitome of morality. This unique perspective on the Jedi's history presents the possibility that they may not be seen as heroes in the end.
The Acolyte Turns Star Wars' Formula On Its Head
Star Wars typically aims to depict the Jedi in the most favorable way possible. As the embodiment of the light side of the Force, they bear the responsibility of upholding order, safeguarding the populace, and preserving equilibrium in the universe. Their ongoing struggle against the Sith has been the driving force behind the entire Star Wars chronicle. Nonetheless, the protagonists have not always been solely Jedi, and that is precisely the aim of The Acolyte.
The primary objective of The Acolyte is to delve into Jedi ethics, which necessitates the exploration of certain forbidden aspects of the Force. Characters who may typically be portrayed as heroic will need to confront the dark side and confront its juxtaposition with the light. Anakin Skywalker's flirtation with the dark side concluded with his complete surrender to its power. The Acolyte could very well examine analogous situations involving Jedi individuals who remain loyal to the light, or who dabble in malevolence without directly succumbing to the dark side itself.
The Acolyte will distinguish itself by thoroughly exploring the dark side. Instead of merely hinting at the Sith's secrets through Palpatine's seductive murmurs, The Acolyte will directly delve into those secrets. This show has the potential to offer a more favorable portrayal of the Sith than they have ever received. Finally, they will have the opportunity to provide their own viewpoint on their conflict with the Jedi. The Acolyte is set to revolutionize the Star Wars formula, fulfilling the much-needed change in the universe.
