The Pokémon anime has had its fair share of bizarre episodes, but "Hocus Pokémon" takes the cake. In this episode, Ash finds himself transformed into a Pikachu through a process called Pokémon Magic. While people turning into Pokémon has been explored in the franchise before, such as in Pokémon Red and Blue where Bill is transformed and needs assistance to revert back, Ash's transformation is even more peculiar.
Set in the Johto era, Ash, Misty, and Brock encounter Lily, a witch-like girl who claims she is in search of peculiar items, including Pikachu's Thunderbolt, for a potion she is concocting. This potion is said to enhance a trainer's understanding of their Pokémon. Through a series of eccentric events, they gather the required items and perform the spell. As the yellow smoke engulfs Ash, he starts to feel a deeper connection to Pikachu. However, when the smoke clears, it becomes apparent that his statement was literal - Ash is now physically transformed into a Pikachu.
A Witch Actually Transforms Ash Into Pikachu
The transformation occurring at the end of the episode creates an expectation that it will continue in the following episode. However, this is only minimally fulfilled as the spell wears off at the start of the next episode and the time when Ash is transformed into a Pikachu is not shown. This missed opportunity makes the entire episode even more peculiar since Ash's transformation is not utilized to further develop his character or his relationship with Pikachu. Some fans have taken a liking to this missed opportunity and have given the transformed Ash the nickname "Ashachu," using the offscreen time as material for fan fiction. Although it may sound strange, there have been instances in the Pokémon franchise where similar transformations have taken place, such as in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games or the 2011 manga Pokémon RéBURST. These instances involve humans being mysteriously transformed into Pokémon or fusing with them for battle purposes. While psychics and mediums have previously appeared in the anime, Ash's encounter with Lily marks the first instance of magic being utilized outright.
The transformation of Ash into a Pikachu in Pokémon is quite bizarre. However, the introduction of "Pokémon magic" becomes even stranger when considering that this transformation ultimately had no significant impact. "Hocus Pokémon" truly stands out as one of the strangest episodes in the Pokémon anime featuring Ash, and quite possibly, the weirdest episode of all time.
