Unleashing the Top Dragon-type Pokemon

Discover the most fearsome and powerful creatures in the Pokemon series with our Dragon Pokemon Tier List From the legendary Koraidon and Miraidon to rare and impressive designs, find out which Dragon-type Pokemon stand out in the game

Dragon-type Pokemon have long been revered as some of the most formidable creatures in the Pokemon series. With the introduction of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, a brand new set of these powerful monsters was added to the mix, including the Legendary Koraidon and Miraidon. Despite the Dragon type being weakened by the introduction of Fairy types in Gen 6, they remain a fan favorite among Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players. However, there are a select few that stand out from the rest, whether it be due to their strength, rarity, or simply their awe-inspiring design.

Although Gen 1 only featured a single Dragon-type evolutionary line, Dragonite quickly became a beloved and feared creature among players thanks to its charming appearance and formidable presence on Lance of the Elite Four's team. As the series has progressed, more Dragon types have been introduced through various means, including new evolutionary lines, Legendaries, pseudo-Legendaries, Mega Evolutions, and even Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Paradox Pokemon. For this ranking, the final stage evolution of each line will be considered as one entry, including any Megas or regional variants.

Dragonite, Salamence, Rayquaza, Garchomp, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Reshiram, Zekrom, Ultra Necrozma, Dragapult, Eternatus, Koraidon, and Miraidon are some of the most formidable and unforgettable Dragon-type Pokémon. Each of these creatures possesses a unique combination of strength, popularity, and charm that sets them apart from other Pokémon. Some, like Ultra Necrozma and Eternatus, are known for their status as some of the toughest bosses in the Pokémon series. Others, like Dragonite, Koraidon, and Miraidon, have captured the hearts of players with their endearing personalities. Many of these Pokémon, such as Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Reshiram, and Zekrom, have become iconic mascots for their respective games and played crucial roles in their stories. Whether it's their power, popularity, or memorability, these Dragons are undoubtedly the best of the best in the world of Pokémon.

Mega Charizard X Flygon Latias Latios Haxorus Kyruem Goodra Zygarde Dracovish Tatsugiri Baxcalibur Roaring Moon Walking Wake

Dragon types that fall under the B-Tier category may not be as popular as others, but they are still impressive in their own right. For instance, Tatsugiri from Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is a small fish with potent capabilities, but it needs Dondozo as its partner to reach its full potential. Dragon types like Flygon and Haxorous have exceptional designs, but their stats fall short when compared to other Dragon types. While Legendaries such as Latios, Latias, and Zygarde are sturdy, they still can't match up to other Dragon-type Legendaries in terms of power and memorability.

Most of these creatures are Dragon types, but they have some limitations that prevent them from standing out. Mega Sceptile and Mega Ampharos are intriguing because they only gain the Dragon type when Mega Evolved, but ultimately they are forgettable compared to other Dragon types and are currently unavailable due to the removal of Mega Evolution in recent generations. Despite being pseudo-Legendaries, Pokemon like Kommo-o and Hydreigon have poor type combinations and are difficult to obtain in their home games, which limits their potential for greatness.

C-Tier

While the Dragon-type Pokémon Alolan Exeggutor, Druddigon, Dragalge, Turtonator, Drampa, Dracozolt, and Cyclizar are not necessarily terrible, they lack the memorability and uniqueness that their counterparts possess. Many of these Pokémon, such as Druddigon, Turtonator, and Drampa, only have one evolution stage, leaving them less memorable than other multi-stage Dragon-types. Cyclizar may have some competitive utility, but it is overshadowed by its past and future forms, which serve as mascots for the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet games. Similarly, Dracozolt cannot compare to the competitive powerhouse that is Dracovish.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are available now for Nintendo Switch.
