The latest installment in Nintendo's long-standing series, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, has been setting records left and right since its release. Notably, it recently achieved the highest rating of any game released in 2023, garnering widespread praise from both critics and gamers alike.
While the game's storyline follows on from its predecessor, Breath of the Wild, players have been exploring the game's vast world in a variety of ways beyond completing the main quests. Utilizing Link's Ultrahand and Autobuild abilities, players have been creating an impressive array of structures and vehicles, some of which have been shared on social media to much fanfare. With such a dedicated fan base, it's clear that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is here to stay in the gaming world, and it's no surprise that it has earned even more recognition from a respected record-keeping source.
Tears of the Kingdom has set a new Guinness World Record for the fastest-selling Nintendo game ever, with over 10 million units sold in just three days. The previous record holder was Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which sold 12 million units in 24 days. What sets these two games apart is that they are available in both physical and digital formats, while the previous record holder, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, was only available physically when it sold 10 million copies in its first eight weeks.
The exact number of physical and digital copies sold for Tears of the Kingdom is currently unknown. However, The Legend of Zelda series continues to hold numerous Guinness World Records and remains one of the most successful video game franchises in history. Although its sales figures may not rival those of other top-selling titles, Nintendo's achievements with this series are still impressive. Tears of the Kingdom, as a record-holding title, is a game that players will likely continue to enjoy for a long time. One streamer spent almost 140 hours completing the game with 100% completion, and it remains to be seen how many other players will finish the game and how long it will take them to do so.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available now for Nintendo Switch.
