EA and Ascendent Studios jointly announced Immortals of Aveum last year, with its official unveiling taking place in April. The excitement continues to build as a recent gameplay trailer provides fans with a more in-depth look at the highly anticipated fantasy first-person shooter. The trailer showcases the game's captivating magical combat by delving into the various spell types, while also offering glimpses of Immortals of Aveum's skill trees, items, crafting, and a tantalizing preview of the game's immersive world and captivating storyline.
In Immortals of Aveum, players assume the role of Jak, an exceptionally skilled battlemage determined to protect his homeland, Lucium, from the invasive kingdom of Rasharn and its oppressive ruler, Sandrakk. Developers have disclosed significant details about Jak, including his rare ability to harness all three colors of magic, setting him apart in the world of Aveum. Further insights into Jak's background reveal that he discovered his magical abilities in adulthood and faced prejudice from mages of esteemed lineage. However, one enigma remains for fans: the mysterious significance of the peculiar tattoo adorning Jak's right eye.
Jak's Tattoo in Immortals of Aveum
The most straightforward and unsatisfying explanation for Jak's tattoo is that it was chosen by the designers for aesthetic reasons. While it is not uncommon for character designers to prioritize appearance over deeper meaning, there is reason to believe that the tattoo may hold more significance in Ascendant Studios' Immortals of Aveum. It is possible that the tattoo serves a practical purpose as well.
Jak's tattoo features a relatively simplistic design, primarily consisting of a single line. It starts just under the corner of his right eye, curving downwards before straightening back up. The line then turns at a right angle and extends backwards, crossing its own tail before curving around his eye and nearly touching his right eyebrow. From there, it diagonally ascends and then descends, forming a small triangle shape. The design is completed by dots on the lower left and upper right sides.
However, the most remarkable aspect of Jak's tattoo in Immortals of Aveum is its affiliation with his mystical abilities. The box art and promotional images for Immortals of Aveum prominently display tattoos that emit a radiant blue glow. Interestingly, this glow is absent in any gameplay footage or screenshots featuring Jak's face. This suggests that the tattoo possesses enchanted qualities that only activate when Jak is casting a spell or preparing to do so. Devoted fans will also observe that Jak's eyes emit a radiant glow when his tattoo becomes illuminated.
Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that the majority of characters in Immortals of Aveum do not appear to possess similar tattoos. In a recent video titled "Immortals of Aveum Unpacked," the developers showcase numerous non-playable characters who lack tattoos, including individuals who clearly possess magical abilities. Even among the central figures known as the Immortals, the only other individual with comparable markings is their leader, General Kirkan. Interestingly, Kirkan happens to be Jak's mentor and the individual responsible for recruiting him into the organization.
Jak and Kirkan are currently the only known Immortals who can command multiple colors of magic. This suggests that the tattoos on their bodies represent individuals with the ability to harness various colors of magic. Since the tattoos themselves possess magic, it is possible that they play a role in enhancing the effectiveness of their powers.
Taking it a step further, it is plausible that Jak's tattoo acts as a sort of magical heads-up display. This might sound amusing, but its placement seems to support this idea. Heads-up displays are commonly seen in first-person shooter games such as Immortals of Aveum. However, most games do not provide an explanation for the presence of the heads-up display within the game's universe. It would be intriguing if Immortals of Aveum stands as one of the exceptions by offering an in-universe explanation for the heads-up display.
Immortals of Aveum launches on August 22, 2023 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
