Actor Robbie Jones expressed that Quentin "Q" Fields was expected to have a longer presence on One Tree Hill. Jones revealed that his character's unexpected death was a result of his series regular deal falling through. Joining the show in its fifth season, Jones received an offer to become a series regular after his initial appearance.
Q was introduced in the 5th season as one of Haley's students and a star player on the Tree Hill Ravens basketball team. Jones was in New Orleans filming his first movie, 2009’s Hurricane Season, with Forest Whitaker when he received the offer. With the movie boosting his career, he and his manager looked for an agent to secure the series regular deal.
Despite their efforts, Jones revealed that his manager acted independently and they subsequently parted ways. However, the show's executive producer later informed Jones that negotiations had reached a standstill and it seemed unlikely that the deal would go through.
The EP then told him about his plans to kill off his character, explaining how it would impact the entire show. Jones claimed, "He ran it all down to me." Despite feeling upset, Jones understood the decision, remarking, "That's kind of brilliant. I cannot question any decision you’re making, no matter how it affects me and the way I feel is negative. I appreciate the opportunity, love you, appreciate it."

Xavier Daniels (Devin McGee) ultimately shot and killed Q — the same man who had previously attacked Brooke (Bush, 41) and broken into her clothing store — in the third episode of season 6. Q later appeared as a ghost in several episodes throughout the season.
Jones recounted the conversation, "We had a lengthy discussion about how he planned to write my character off the show while I was at my hotel filming another movie on days off. It broke my heart." Reflecting on his early departure, Jones expressed, "Ultimately, leaving One Tree Hill turned out to be the greatest blessing. It was the right decision and has brought me much success."
