Bethany Joy Lenz expresses gratitude towards the One Tree Hill cast and crew for their efforts to help her escape a cult during the filming of the show. In an interview with Variety, Lenz acknowledges the kindness and care shown to her, although she admits to being stubborn at the time. She explains her commitment to what she believed were the best choices for herself. Lenz also sheds light on the isolating nature of such groups, emphasizing the tactics used to breed distrust and ensure loyalty to the leadership.
Lenz disclosed that her participation in the cult, which she claims was widely known among the OTH cast, started when she was in her early twenties, approximately a year or two after landing the role of Haley James Scott on OTH in 2003. It wasn't until "shortly after" the conclusion of the teen drama in 2012 that she managed to break free from the organization.
Although Lenz hasn't divulged the specific name of the group, she did reveal that it was a cult based on the Bible. The actress confessed that she grew up in a Christian household and frequently took part in Wednesday night bible studies. Whenever she relocated to new cities or states, she would actively search for a bible study group to join.
One Tree Hill played a significant role in saving my life, as I spent nine months of the year in North Carolina," Lenz expressed. "During that time, I had numerous flights back and forth and many visitors, but ultimately, my life revolved around North Carolina. The physical distance had a significant impact on my personal growth and awakening."
Lenz initially shared her experience during a July episode of "Drama Queens," the OTH rewatch podcast that she hosts alongside former co-stars Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton Morgan.

"I didn't intend to emphasize it. It started to seem like I was concealing something because it played such a crucial role in my personal journey during my time on One Tree Hill," she explained to Variety regarding her choice to speak up. "While we're discussing all the behind-the-scenes moments and reminiscing about everyone hanging out, I keep thinking, 'I wish I had been there.' Eventually, it became apparent that I should just be honest, Joy."
Since sharing her experiences, Lenz has expressed that she has overcome the initial shame she felt about being involved in the cult.
"And what I've come to understand is that there is immense strength in confronting and bringing to light that sense of shame, creating space for new knowledge and insights," she expressed. "This not only holds power for me personally, but my ultimate intention in discussing this matter is to offer healing opportunities to countless others. I am well aware that I'm not alone in this experience."
