Earlier this month, Ubisoft unveiled the highly anticipated game, Star Wars Outlaws, providing fans with a first glimpse of its premise, central characters, and gameplay. Excitingly, Ubisoft also announced the involvement of well-known entities within the Star Wars universe, adding to the anticipation surrounding the game.
Who Are The Hutts In The Star Wars Franchise?
The Hutts have always had a unique dynamic with the Star Wars franchise. Despite their complex lore, they are often portrayed as sources of humor or leaders of criminal enterprises. In the Star Wars: The Old Republic games, a member of this species is typically depicted as the head of an organized gang, engaging in battles with other species for control over the galaxy's underworld.
One of the most well-known Hutts is Jabba the Hutt, who appeared in the original Star Wars trilogy. Initially mentioned in A New Hope, Jabba played the role of an unseen antagonist by placing a bounty on Han Solo's head due to a lost shipment. In Return of the Jedi, Jabba made his memorable full appearance and was ultimately killed by Princess Leia during an escape attempt involving Luke, Han, and Lando. Recently, the developer of Star Wars Outlaws confirmed that the Hutts will play a significant role in protagonist Kay Vess' story.
How Star Wars Outlaws Will Involve The Hutts
In the reveal trailer for Star Wars Outlaws, it is evident that the game is an open-world action-adventure centered around heists and criminal activities. Like most crime-driven narratives, the characters will likely need to gather equipment, tools, funds, and skilled individuals to successfully execute their planned crimes. Although not explicitly mentioned, the appearance of Jabba the Hutt in the trailer suggests that he will have a role in the game.
During this particular period in the Star Wars canon, the universe was engulfed in chaos, even within organized crime. The Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters comic story reveals that a war erupted among the criminal factions over the possession of Han Solo's body. Eventually, Jabba emerged as the sole remaining leader of the Hutts after the conflict settled. Although it is unclear when the game takes place in relation to this event, it is highly probable that the protagonist, Kay, will have to confront Jabba due to his position as the head of the largest crime syndicate in the galaxy. This is further supported by the developer's commentary on the gameplay footage, where they mention the Hutts as one of the factions Kay will have to contend with.
The involvement of the Hutts in Star Wars Outlaws remains uncertain, but considering the game's concept and statements from the developer, it is not unreasonable to expect that the main character will frequently encounter them. Players will have to patiently await additional gameplay footage from Ubisoft to gain a clearer understanding.
Star Wars Outlaws releases in 2024 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
