Warning! This article contains spoilers for Ahsoka episode 8.
Summary
Ahsoka delves into uncharted Force powers, such as Force echo and Force empathy, showcasing them with a gravitas that broadens our knowledge of Jedi capabilities.
The concept of using the Force to perform a double-jump, which was previously only depicted in video games, receives a substantial canonical explanation in Ahsoka. Jedi are shown to either receive a Force push or grant themselves one, providing a thoughtful exploration of this ability.
While a double-jump may appear exaggerated in live-action, its successful implementation in video games suggests that it should be kept within the Star Wars canon specifically for that medium.
Ahsoka has provided a serious explanation for achieving one of the most comical manifestations of the Force in Star Wars' history. Compared to other Disney+ projects in the franchise, Ahsoka has focused extensively on the Jedi and their mastery of Force abilities. The presence of mystical Jedi in The Mandalorian has mainly revolved around Grogu and occasional appearances by Ahsoka and Luke Skywalker. Similarly, The Book of Boba Fett has deliberately minimized the depiction of Force powers to align with the character's origin as a bounty hunter-turned-Mos Espa's ruler.
Obi-Wan Kenobi delved into the Jedi's history in Star Wars, but didn't introduce any groundbreaking Force powers. Ahsoka, however, introduced new abilities like Force echo and Force empathy through Baylan Skoll. Towards the conclusion of Ahsoka's journey, a Force power that was previously regarded as frivolous and impractical was showcased and explained with a profound sense of seriousness.
Ahsoka Finally Explains How Double-Jumps Work In Canon
The power in question is the ability to utilize the Force to perform a double-jump. Due to its unexplainable nature, the double-jump has mostly been depicted in Star Wars Legends through video games and other mediums rather than live-action adaptations. From the LEGO Star Wars franchise to the more recent Star Wars Jedi video games, the concept of using the Force for double-jumps has become quite common.
However, in episode 8 of Ahsoka, there is an Easter egg that provides a more serious canonical explanation for this power. In this episode, Ezra Bridger successfully performs a double-jump to traverse a significant gap and reach Grand Admiral Thrawn's ship, albeit with some assistance from Sabine. According to Star Wars canon, a Jedi can achieve a double-jump by receiving a midair Force push from another Force-user, or by generating the momentum themselves.
Ahsoka's Double-Jump Looks Ridiculous - But Works In The Games
It is undeniable that the utilization of a double-jump in canon, as demonstrated by Ahsoka, can appear somewhat ridiculous. However, this quirkiness is overshadowed by the effective portrayal of a tangible character being lifted in midair, particularly due to its connection to Sabine's character development and Kevin Kiner's exceptional score.
While a Force double-jump may seem silly in a live-action setting, it is a seamless fit for the video game medium. The latest installment of the mainline Star Wars video game series, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, flawlessly incorporates a double-jump and midair Force dash. Hence, it may be more fitting to reserve this move for the video game realm of Star Wars canon following Ahsoka's portrayal.
