The Grim Fate of WoW's Forsaken and Worgen

In World of Warcraft, players have the option to choose from a diverse array of races, each with their own unique background, culture and role in the game's story. However, two races, the formidable worgen and the cunning Forsaken, face an uncertain future due to the circumstances of their creation. Without finding a way to survive, these races are destined to fade away in the near future. The Forsaken in particular face a challenging dilemma, leaving their future in question.

World of Warcraft's Forsaken Face a Moral Dilemma

The Forsaken are a group of undead members who were once humans living in Lordaeron. Their tragic fate occurred when Arthas Menethil, upon returning to his homeland, unleashed his Scourge army, causing the land to fall under the onslaught of the undead masses. Many innocent people were killed and raised as undead. However, with the help of Sylvanas Windrunner, Arthas was eventually driven back to Northrend, freeing many of the undead in Lordaeron from his grasp. Grateful for their newfound freedom, the Forsaken undead pledged their loyalty to Sylvanas - their Banshee Queen. After the events of Wrath of the Lich King, Sylvanas managed to gain the fealty of nine Val’kyr, undead winged warriors who held sway over the powers of undeath. With the help of these Val’kyr, Sylvanas could refresh her ranks and create new Forsaken, allowing the race to continue for years.

After Sylvanas left for the Shadowlands with her remaining Val'kyr, the Forsaken were left without a leader and without hope. Despite this setback, new leaders like Lilian Voss and Calia Menethil have stepped up, instilling newfound hope in the Forsaken community. However, the question remains as to how the Forsaken will continue to survive. Some believe that it is cruel to raise the deceased into undeath and deny them a proper afterlife, while others see it as a necessary means of survival. Calia Menethil, as the only Lightforged Undead, offers a potential solution, but ultimately it is up to the Forsaken to decide their own fate.

World of Warcraft's Worgen Can't Procreate

The origin of the worgen is rooted in a misguided Druidic spell cast by Genn Greymane to protect his lands from the Scourge. With the help of Archmage Arugal, the worgen were summoned from their imprisonment in the Emerald Dream by the night elves. Though successful in defeating the Scourge and saving Gilneas, the worgen soon turned on the city and any Gilnean human bitten by them would transform into a worgen as well. However, a specific ritual is needed to control their wild side. While worgen offspring are not cursed, the only way for the race to increase in numbers is by willingly biting others and guiding them through the taming ritual. Unfortunately, the worgen lack access to the necessary location within Gilneas since it was abandoned after the Cataclysm, resulting in limited expansion possibilities.

The races of Genn Greymane and Sylvanas Windrunner have become integral to the Warcraft franchise. It would be unfortunate if their presence on Azeroth was cut short, and fans can only hope that World of Warcraft will provide a compelling reason for their continued existence.
