We're still amazed by the Google Pixel 8 launch event, but Samsung doesn't seem too impressed. It made a big announcement of multiple new Galaxy FE products on the same day as Google's event. And just one day after that, it finally unveiled the highly anticipated SmartTag 2 tracker. This upgraded version surpasses the original SmartTag in several ways – it now offers both Bluetooth LE and UWB connectivity, has improved IP67 durability, and boasts a maximum battery life of 700 days. Priced at $30, the SmartTag 2 seems like an obvious choice, though it does require a Samsung smartphone.
The original SmartTag and SmartTag+ were introduced in 2021. The standard SmartTag offered Bluetooth LE connectivity and a battery life of 300 days. The more expensive SmartTag+ had the added feature of ultra-wide band (UWB) for precise location-tracking, but its battery life of 165 days was disappointing. In comparison, the SmartTag 2 is miles ahead of its predecessors, with the added bonus of maintaining the same $30 price tag – a pleasantly surprising offer.
Samsung claims that the SmartTag 2 has a battery life of 500 days with a coin-cell battery. By enabling the Power Saving Mode, the battery life extends to 700 days. Although the exact workings of the Power Saving Mode are not explained by Samsung, it is recommended for continuous tracking of items. This feature can be easily enabled or disabled from your smartphone.
In addition, unlike the original SmartTag, the SmartTag 2 comes with both Bluetooth LE and UWB connectivity as standard. It introduces a new Lost Mode, allowing users to compose a message for any missing SmartTag 2. If someone discovers the SmartTag 2 and scans it with their phone, they will be able to view your message and contact information. (It is unclear why this feature was omitted from the original SmartTag.)
The SmartTag 2 has undergone a sleek redesign, now sporting an oval shape and featuring a durable metal keyring to minimize wear and tear. Additionally, it boasts an enhanced IP67 dust and water resistance rating (upgraded from IP53), providing reliable protection against elements like sand, rainstorms, and even the occasional pool dip. This high-quality rating also makes it ideal for pet owners looking to attach the SmartTag 2 onto their furry companion's collar. Surprisingly, this unique concept has received the Samsung seal of approval. For pet owners, Samsung offers the convenience of receiving alerts if their pet ventures too far from home and has even introduced a Pet Walking Mode, transforming the SmartTag 2 into an effective animal exercise tracker.
The SmartTag 2 will be available for purchase from October 11th at a very reasonable price of $30, and it comes with a replaceable coin-cell battery. However, it is important to note that the SmartTag 2 is exclusively compatible with Samsung phones and does not work with other brands.
