Mark Hamill's portrayal of Luke Skywalker has become synonymous with the iconic character, despite his numerous other roles. However, with Hamill's eventual departure from the franchise, fans are left wondering who will take up the mantle of the beloved Jedi. Luke Skywalker's importance to Star Wars cannot be overstated, as he has remained a central figure throughout all three major trilogies and even made appearances in recent spin-off series like The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. While Hamill's voice was used in these appearances, a younger version of Luke was physically portrayed by Max Lloyd-Jones and digitally transformed to resemble Hamill's likeness.
It has been suggested that the effort put into avoiding recasting Luke Skywalker is significant, and Mark Hamill himself would agree. Hamill recently discussed his involvement with The Mandalorian, where he worked with Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni to bring a younger version of Luke to the screen. Despite enjoying the show and the work involved, Hamill found it "unusual" to watch the footage during production and after completion. When asked if he would continue to be involved in the Star Wars franchise in this way, he explained that while some may suggest he could do a whole series of Luke post-'Return of the Jedi', he does not think it is necessary and that an age-appropriate actor could be used instead. Hamill also noted that the process of recreating the beloved character of Luke Skywalker cannot be done cheaply.
Fans of Star Wars have long been vocal about their desire to see Sebastian Stan take on the role of a younger Luke Skywalker in future Star Wars projects. However, Lucasfilm has yet to make any official announcements regarding the casting of the iconic character. While Deepfake technology has allowed for a Luke Skywalker cameo, future appearances may require a new actor to step into the role. Lucasfilm has been hesitant to recast actors who are too old to portray a character, as evidenced by Ewan McGregor reprising his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi almost twenty years after his last live-action portrayal of the character.
It was a bold decision for Lucasfilm to keep Carrie Fisher's character, Leia Organa, in Star Wars: Episode 9 using old footage and editing software. However, there is a debate on whether or not it is the best approach to honor the iconic figure. Perhaps, introducing new actors may be a more sustainable and favorable option for Lucasfilm and Disney. Fans can watch the Star Wars saga on Disney Plus.
