Star Wars: The Clone Wars introduced a plethora of new characters and delved deeper into the lives of familiar ones such as Count Dooku, Darth Maul, and Mace Windu. While some new characters only made brief appearances in a single episode, others made recurring appearances throughout the series, significantly influencing the overarching storyline.

One such character that recurrently appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars was Satine Kryze, the Duchess and ruler. Satine governed her people during a challenging period characterized by widespread destruction, violence, and acts of terrorism inflicted upon her citizens. Despite her initial reluctance to be involved in the Clone Wars, she found herself entangled in numerous conflicts due to the relentless efforts of the Separatists and the unyielding influence of the Dark Side of the Force.

Who Is Satine Kryze?

Satine, the Duchess of Kalevala and ruler of the Mandalorian system, was a staunch pacifist who advocated for peace and urged her people to remain neutral in the Clone Wars and previous conflicts. Despite her efforts to maintain neutrality, Satine often found herself entangled in the Separatists' schemes. They persistently attempted to recruit her people or seize control of the Mandalore system.

Before assuming the role of Duchess, the Mandalorians were notorious for their violence, actively participating in galactic wars and embracing a bounty hunter lifestyle. However, Satine's ascent to power marked a transition to the principles of the New Mandalorians, embracing non-violence and seeking harmony throughout the galaxy. This shift in ideology sparked dissent among her citizens, leading to a civil war among the Mandalorians prior to the outbreak of the Clone Wars. This conflict ultimately saw the emergence of the extremist group known as the Death Watch.

As the civil war escalated, the Jedi Council called upon Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi to ensure the safety of the Duchess, shielding her from any potential assassinations. Throughout the conflict, the Jedi and Satine frequently found themselves away from Mandalore. Eventually, when the New Mandalorians emerged as the victors, they returned. During their time under the Jedi's protection, Satine and Obi-Wan's affection for each other deepened. However, their love remained unexpressed due to Obi-Wan's devotion to the Jedi Order. Meanwhile, lurking in the shadows, the Death Watch aligned themselves with the Separatists, their ultimate aim being the overthrow of the New Mandalorians.

When Does Satine Kryze First Appear?

Satine Kryze, who had already gained power prior to the events of The Phantom Menace, finally made her on-screen debut in "The Mandalore Plot," season 2, episode 12 of The Clone Wars. In this installment, a band of Mandalorians launches an assault on a Republic vessel, prompting Obi-Wan to journey to Mandalore for a discussion with Duchess Satine Kryze regarding this act of violence. She assures him that she was not involved in the attack, leading them to the conclusion that the Death Watch has resurfaced after seemingly disappearing following the Mandalorian civil war.

The possible revival of the Death Watch is investigated by both Obi-Wan and Satine. They discover that Governor Vizsla, a government colleague of Satine, is leading the terrorist rebellion. Obi-Wan successfully defeats the corrupt governor, but the Death Watch continues to exist, leading Obi-Wan to suspect they are collaborating with the Separatists. Despite this suspicion, Satine Kryze remains steadfast in her belief of maintaining neutrality, desiring to prevent further violence and bloodshed among her people.

After "The Mandalore Plot," Satine makes several appearances in The Clone Wars series. Throughout her time in power, she remains committed to pacifism. However, she is eventually captured by the Death Watch and held prisoner by Darth Maul himself. Upon receiving news of her imprisonment, Obi-Wan embarks on a rescue mission to save the Duchess. Unfortunately, Obi-Wan is also captured before he can liberate Satine and is presented to Darth Maul as his prisoner. Outnumbered and helpless, Obi-Wan is forced to witness Maul fatally stabbing Satine. In her final moments, she falls into Obi-Wan's arms and declares her love for him before passing away.

The actress who portrayed Bo-Katan in The Mandalorian has suggested that Cate Blanchett would be a good choice to play Satine in any live-action project. Nevertheless, at present, the possibility of seeing Satine Kryze in live action remains slim.
