Summary

Hayden Christensen's reprisal of the role of Anakin Skywalker in the Ahsoka finale holds great importance for the expansive Star Wars universe. By incorporating the Mortis gods in the Ahsoka finale, a strong connection is established between The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and Ahsoka herself.

Anakin's presence on Peridea following his death exemplifies his role as the Chosen One, tasked with maintaining the balance of the Force. Assuming the Father's position, he fulfills his duty.

Hayden Christensen's return as Anakin Skywalker in the finale of Ahsoka holds significant implications for the Star Wars universe. Unlike previous instances where Anakin appeared as a hologram or in visions, his manifestation as a Force ghost in Ahsoka is genuine. This marks Anakin's first on-screen appearance as a Force ghost since Return of the Jedi in 1983. While Ahsoka believes Anakin has always been by her side, it is possible that his presence on Peridea serves a more significant purpose. It is likely that it was his responsibility to reside there after his death.

The Mortis Arc Was The Closest Star Wars Came To Explaining "Balance"

Apart from unveiling Anakin Skywalker's Force ghost, the Ahsoka finale also featured Baylan Skoll discovering a series of statues. These statues portray the three Mortis gods from Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 3 and are among the most formidable characters in the entire franchise. By referencing the Mortis gods, Filoni has effectively interconnected The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and Ahsoka. Their profound influence on shaping the destiny of the galaxy cannot be underestimated, and one could argue that Baylan may have just stumbled upon the secret to harnessing the Force itself.

The Mortis arc in The Clone Wars stands out as one of the most allegorical storylines in the entire franchise. When Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Ahsoka respond to an outdated distress signal, they find themselves transported to Mortis, a realm that holds immense significance. Mortis serves as a conduit for the Force in the galaxy, making it a truly unique location. Within Mortis, resided three powerful entities known as the Mortis gods. Each god embodies a distinct facet of the Force – the Daughter represents the light side, the Son personifies the dark side, and the Father maintains the delicate balance between them.

Since the introduction of the Chosen One prophecy by George Lucas in The Phantom Menace, there has been a lingering question regarding how Anakin's heroic death in Return of the Jedi accomplished the task of balancing the Force. However, within the Mortis arc, the Father clarifies to Anakin that he had summoned him to verify if he truly was the Chosen One. In a stunning demonstration of power, Anakin manages to subdue both the Daughter and the Son simultaneously. Essentially, he is able to wield control over both sides of the Force simultaneously, unequivocally proving his capability to bring actual balance to the Force. Nevertheless, despite the Father's offer, Anakin decides to depart Mortis.

Anakin’s Force Ghost Returned To Mortis To Fulfill The Prophecy

It is highly likely that despite his turn to the dark side and departure from Mortis, Anakin Skywalker returned to maintain balance after his death. If Baylan's belief that Peridea holds the key to Mortis is correct, then Mortis may now be physically located there. The proximity of Anakin's Force ghost to the conduit of the Force on the same planet cannot be a mere coincidence. Following his demise in Return of the Jedi, he journeyed to Mortis (Peridea) to ensure the balance of the Force following the death of the Father in The Clone Wars.

The Star Wars franchise has already portrayed the recurring theme of Force ghosts aiding and guiding the living. Qui-Gon returned to offer guidance to Obi-Wan, Obi-Wan in turn guided Luke, and Luke himself appeared to guide Rey. Although Anakin's Force ghost has made appearances in canon novels, there are significant gaps in the storyline where he remains absent. It is reasonable to assume that for the majority of the time after Return of the Jedi, his spirit resided on Mortis to fulfill the prophecy of the Chosen One. The Father himself had prophesied that the Chosen One would take his place.

Anakin Still Watches Over Ahsoka Because Of Her Connection To The Light Side

The question arises as to why Anakin is seemingly guarding Ahsoka in the finale. It could be argued that duty drives him just as much as his love for his former Padawan. In the Mortis arc, Ahsoka experienced a brief death but was revived by the selfless sacrifice of the Daughter. Since then, Ahsoka has been intrinsically connected to the light side of the Force. The appearance of Morai, the white bird, towards the end of the finale further emphasizes Ahsoka's continued connection to the Daughter, despite her hardships.

If it is indeed Anakin's duty as the Chosen One to maintain the balance of the Force, it becomes understandable why he continues to watch over Ahsoka. This is due to her association with the Daughter and the light side of the Force. Alternatively, the arrival of Baylan on Mortis may signify a shift in power. Baylan's animosity towards Anakin suggests that he may seek to remove or replace Anakin's role in preserving the balance of the Force. Only time will reveal Dave Filoni's plans for Baylan, but the presence of Anakin's Force ghost indicates that he fulfilled his duty as the Chosen One in relation to Ahsoka.
