The Action Legend Fast & Furious Rejected: Vin Diesel's Surprising Decision

Dom Toretto's family is always welcome at the table in Fast & Furious, but Vin Diesel drew the line at one particular action star. The original idea for the Fast Saga was a less intense version of Point Break, focusing on street racing and stealing DVD players. Despite his success in Pitch Black, Diesel was not yet a household name. The film instead aimed to launch the careers of aspiring actors, turning them into global sensations.

Ten years after the franchise first premiered, Fast Five ushered in a new era of thrilling action, featuring renowned actors such as Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Kurt Russell, and Charlize Theron, all delivering captivating performances and adrenaline-pumping moments.

Yet, Diesel's significant influence in the series' creative direction became apparent when he adamantly opposed the inclusion of an icon into the cast.

Vin Diesel said no to Jean-Claude Van Damme in Fast & Furious

Jean-Claude Van Damme, the butt-kicking muscles from Brussels, wanted to be in the Fast & Furious franchise – but Vin Diesel wouldn’t allow it.

The specific movie in which he would have made an appearance is uncertain, however, Van Damme recently disclosed in an interview with The Telegraph that he was wanted in the Fast & Furious franchise. Regrettably, Vin Diesel did not support this idea, stating, "No, I don't want him." Van Damme did not provide any further details regarding Diesel's rejection, leaving it as a perplexing mystery. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that Diesel has had previous conflicts with other stars, such as his years-long feud with The Rock, which seems to have simmered down following Johnson's cameo in Fast X's post-credits scene.

Van Damme's most recent mainstream role was in The Expendables 2 back in 2012, where he portrayed the antagonist, Vilain. Although his character was killed off, Sylvester Stallone apparently mentioned the idea of reintroducing him as Vilain's twin brother, Claude, as a nod to the movie Double Impact. "Yeah! That's what Stallone told me," he revealed.

This possibility could be seen as a hint. Throughout the Fast Saga, there have always been speculations about a secret primary villain who is the opposite of Dom. It's plausible that Van Damme could be the ultimate boss behind the scenes, and Vin Diesel wanted to keep that revelation for a significant moment. Alternatively, it could also be that Van Damme no longer has a desire to be the biggest star in the world.

"I produce and star in one film annually, functioning as my own authority. The production is a small-scale endeavor, involving only two or three actors, creating an intimate village-like atmosphere rather than a bustling city. I possess reputable acting skills, and that's the extent of my knowledge," he supplemented.
