Vin Diesel confirms multiple Fast & Furious spinoff projects in development to continue the franchise's successful narrative after the original saga's end The recent release of Fast X proved the franchise's continued financial success, ensuring its enduring popularity

Fast & Furious star and producer Vin Diesel has confirmed that the franchise will continue with several spinoff projects currently in development. Since its inception in 2001 as a unique action-crime thriller with a focus on street racing, the franchise has become one of the most financially successful media franchises. The recent release of the 10th film from the original saga, Fast X, generated a solid worldwide box office opening of about $320 million, further proving the franchise's continued viability.

Diesel revealed during an interview with Variety at the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project Block Party that he has been working on numerous Fast & Furious spinoffs, some of which have been in development for over five years.

I initiated the development of the female spinoff, along with other spinoffs, back in 2017. It is imperative that I deliver the finale at the earliest to pave the way for launching all the spinoffs.

Which characters from Fast & Furious franchise have the potential for spinoffs?

There is no shortage of potential spinoffs for the Fast & Furious franchise. One exciting possibility is a Tokyo Drift-style feature focused on Han Lue, played by Sung Kang. Another option could be a prequel centered on Jakob Toretto, played by John Cena, during his time working for Mr. Nobody. The franchise's success with the Hobbs & Shaw spinoff, which had the fifth-highest domestic gross in the entire series, demonstrates the potential for future spinoffs. With Dwayne Johnson's surprise return in Fast X and Jason Statham's continued success as an action star, it's possible that another Hobbs & Shaw film could be in the works.

The current front-runner for a female-led Fast & Furious film has Nicole Perlman, Lindsey Beer, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet on board to write the script. Despite Michelle Rodriguez's reservations about spinoffs, the introduction of Queenie's (Helen Mirren) female militia in Fast X opens up many possibilities. Additionally, the writers have a rich pool of female characters, including Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel) and Tess (Brie Larson), to explore. If Cipher (Charlize Theron) survives the main storyline, a redemption arc similar to Deckard Shaw's could be an intriguing option.

While Diesel is developing several spinoffs, they are likely to be put on hold until the main saga is concluded, which may take longer than anticipated. Originally slated to be the first part of a two-part finale, Fast X may now be stretched into a trilogy with Diesel hinting at a potential Fast & Furious 12. With two more mainline films in development and several spinoffs in the works, it appears fans of the franchise will have plenty of Fast & Furious action to look forward to in the coming years.
