Tarek El Moussa opened up about how his divorce from Christina Hall completely changed his life. "After my ex-wife left, I had to do some serious soul-searching," El Moussa, 42, shared on the "Jeff Fenster Show" podcast on Monday, January 8. "I even stayed at a halfway house for a while. This is the first time I've talked about it."
The host of Flipping 101 sought refuge in a communal home due to the "turmoil" he was experiencing. El Moussa confessed, "I didn't trust myself to be alone. That's how bad I was."
He added, "I ended up there because I didn't know where else to go and I needed round-the-clock care. It was a difficult time because it felt like I had lost everything overnight. There was so much going on."
El Moussa revealed that it took him years to recover from his divorce, describing it as hitting rock bottom and not wanting to live. He eventually had a defining moment about 10 months after the split when he realized that life isn't fair. The divorce from his ex-wife Hall, finalized in 2018, came after seven years of marriage and three years following his diagnosis with two types of cancer, which he said had a significant impact on his behavior.
"In hindsight, I recognize that I was not the best person. I fell short as a husband and I definitely struggled as a father," El Moussa confessed, referencing his children, Taylor, 13, and Brayden, 8, whom he shares with Hall. "I won't make excuses – I was dealing with a lot at the time, but my behavior was not acceptable."
The HGTV personality acknowledged that his life "has been marked by a great deal of pain," but he has used that pain as "motivation" over the years. He expressed gratitude for his life and "all that I have," including his wife, Heather Rae El Moussa, and their son, Tristan, who was born in January 2023.
