Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse revealed a connection between the Alchemax scientist Miles Morales and the character known as the Spot. In Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Morales hits the scientist with a bagel, leading to the scientist's transformation. However, the film left audiences with numerous questions about the Spot. Fortunately, a piece of concept art provided by an artist who worked on the film sheds some light on the character.
In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, it is revealed that the Spot's creation happened following the explosion of the collider used by Kingpin to open inter-dimensional portals in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. In the comics, Jonathan Ohnn also obtained his powers through an experiment commissioned by Kingpin. Nonetheless, the Spot in the comics actively chooses to enter the portals he creates before they disappear forever. In the movie, however, the Spot is reluctant to accept these powers and perceives them as a curse. Despite this initial resistance, he eventually comes to embrace his abilities. This origin story sets up a significantly more emotionally complex narrative for the Spot compared to his comic book counterpart.
Spot's journey of accepting and embracing his powers is not merely explained to the audience; it is vividly displayed. Artist Aymeric Kevin showcased a Twitter image that precisely captures this visual progression. Kevin revealed a concept art piece he designed for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, featuring five distinct versions of the Spot: one as the human form of Jonathan Ohnn, and the remaining four portraying the Spot as he increasingly grows in power and rage. With each stage, the Spot gains confidence in his posture and becomes consumed by the mesmerizing portals.
Out of the five images, the most fascinating one is the fifth. In this image, the Spot appears at his least human, with his body almost entirely engulfed by portals. Surrounding him are colorful streaks and various shapes that bear resemblance to the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse scene, where he reached the pinnacle of his powers by immersing himself into the Earth-50101 collider. Although not identical, the concept art evokes a similar chilling tone as the final product.
While it may seem that the Spot reached his peak abilities by the conclusion of Across the Spider-Verse, he did not have the opportunity to showcase the full extent of his powers. Although his physical form may not undergo significant changes from Across the Spider-Verse to Beyond the Spider-Verse, he will undoubtedly employ his powers in a different manner. If Kevin's artwork is any indication, the Spot will unreservedly embrace his darker side and employ every trick at his disposal to confront Miles and his allies.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is playing in theaters now.
