Invincible's mid-season finale leaves Mark at a surprising crossroads, setting up the possibility of a Spider-Man cameo. The cliffhanger doesn't just set up Mark Grayson's next big struggle; it puts him at a very definitive point in the story. Mark's next adventure takes him to a multiverse, where an unexpected team-up awaits.
Invincible unexpectedly enters the 616 Marvel Universe, a shocking twist penned by series creator Robert Kirkman. This marks the first and only encounter between Invincible and a Marvel hero. While it remains uncertain if a Marvel hero will make an appearance in the upcoming season, the meeting between Invincible and Spider-Man is certainly worth noting.
Invincible visits the Marvel Universe in Marvel Team-Up #14
Marvel Team-Up #14 in 2004 marked a significant moment when Invincible partnered with Spider-Man. This occurred after Angstrom Levy maliciously threw Mark Grayson into alternate dimensions in Invincible #32, trying to weaken him enough to eliminate him.
The second dimension Mark lands in is the 616 Marvel Universe, interrupting a fight between Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus. The two hit it off pretty well, despite Invincible poking fun at Marvel naming conventions. Spider-Man agrees to help him.
Marvel ComicsSpider-Man and Invincible have a rocky start, but they have the beginning of a great friendship.
There isn't much more to the meeting. Invincible has some great interactions with the Avengers and acts as a voice for long-time comic fans by expressing his lack of surprise at Peter ending up with someone like Mary Jane. Invincible fits in well in the Marvel Universe, but it's a shame that this is a one-off event. After Spidey and Invincible defeat Doctor Octopus together, the issue ends with Levy opening his next portal and Invincible moving on to the next issue of his own book. To this day, neither Spider-Man nor Invincible has mentioned the adventure.
Will Invincible meet Spider-Man in Season 2?
It seems unlikely that Spider-Man could appear, but there’s enough smoke that there may be a fire. The intrigue dates all the way back to the Invincible Season 2 teaser.
In the recently unveiled video from January 2023, Allen and Invincible can be seen enjoying a meal together. Although this particular scene is not part of the original series, it is worth noting that Mark's phone appears to display what looks like the cover of Marvel Team-Up #14. This discovery prompted fans to question the production team about the potential tease, to which the crew promptly denied having any knowledge of it.
Adding to the suspicion is the appearance of Josh Keaton in the cast when the Season 2 trailer was released. Although it remains unknown who Keaton will portray in Invincible Season 2, he is recognized as a longstanding voice actor for Spider-Man. Keaton previously voiced the character in the Spectacular Spider-Man series in 2008, and in various video games like Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, Spider-Man: Edge of Time, and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. He also made a cameo appearance in Across the Spider-Verse.
Despite the seeming unlikelihood of a Spider-Man cameo, it's worth noting that Amazon and Marvel have a partnership underway. Prime Video is set to launch new series featuring Silk and Spider-Man Noir. With this collaboration already established, it's not inconceivable that Marvel might agree to a significant one-time cameo from the web-slinger.
