According to Deadline, the film is expected to exceed its initial projection of $80 million for opening weekend, having already earned a remarkable $51.7 million on Friday alone. This impressive debut marks the best opening day of 2023 thus far, surpassing even the record-breaking Super Mario Bros. Movie. The film is projected to earn a total of $113 million over its first three days, more than tripling the opening weekend earnings of its predecessor, Into the Spider-Verse, which earned $35 million before going on to gross $375 million worldwide.
Can Any Future 2023 Titles Compete with Across the Spider-Verse?
Despite not matching Mario's overall opening weekend of $146 million, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's record-breaking opening day is still a remarkable achievement. Competing with such a powerhouse film, which had a significant impact on the 2023 box office, is a feat in itself. Even if Spider-Verse only manages to gross a fraction of Mario's $1.2 billion, it will still surpass its predecessor from 2018.
