Fans are being drawn to an alternate universe in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, resulting in increased theater attendance. This highly anticipated sequel to the award-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has already surpassed $500 million at the box office within just three weeks, surpassing its predecessor's total theatrical earnings by over $100 million. Despite facing bans in certain countries, the film continues to thrive. In response to initial complaints about audio issues, Sony promptly distributed updated prints to affected theaters.
Fans who revisited the film after Sony sent the updated prints observed certain modifications. Specifically, during the scene where Miguel requests backup from Lyla, one version concludes with Lyla pointing at Miguel, while the other version shows Lyla taking a selfie with Miguel. Andrew Leviton, an associate editor of Across the Spider-Verse, indirectly acknowledged the existence of these two versions when he tweeted, "I was wondering when people might start noticing..."
However, the aforementioned scene is not the sole disparity between the two versions. A Reddit user named Hohoho-you compiled a collection of 8 changes that fans allegedly spotted. Although most of these changes consist of dialogue or minor alterations to certain scenes, they also encompassed some cherished moments among fans. It is important to note that this alternative version is distinct from the Alternate Universe Cut found on the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Blu-Ray release, which added 26 minutes of supplementary scenes to the film.
The confirmation regarding whether the two versions were initially premiered in theaters or if Sony replaced them when addressing sound issues remains uncertain. Currently, there is no information available on how to access the alternate version, whether it is exclusively shown in select theaters or if there are multiple alternate versions. Fans will have to purchase a ticket and rely on their observation skills to identify any differences, or they can wait to see if both versions are eventually released digitally or on DVD.
It will be intriguing to discover if there are more than just two versions or if additional versions will be introduced during the film's theatrical run. However, fans can be assured that none of these changes have any impact on the established canonical events. Regardless of the version seen, our universe remains secure, and its existence will not be entirely erased.
