Sophia Bush and Bethany Joy Lenz are still amazed by the unforgettable heart-eating dog scene from One Tree Hill, just like us.

During the "Drama Queens" podcast on Monday, April 29, Bush, 41, reminisced about the episode. She mentioned, "This is the episode that gets talked about the most... Well, I don't want to say 'talked about the most for,' but I'll say 'made fun of the most for.' Yeah, a dog eats a heart and everything is insane."

Lenz, who is 43 years old, mentioned that there were many touching and significant moments in the episode. However, there were also some strange moments, especially involving the dog.

Reflecting on the episode, Lenz shared, "Overall, I did like it. I'm thinking about it now. If the scene with the dog eating the heart in the hospital wasn't included, would I still like this episode? And the answer is yes."

In episode 18 of season 6, Dan Scott (played by Paul Johansson) was in a hospital waiting for a heart transplant. While waiting in the hospital, a medical professional accidentally dropped the cooler carrying the heart, causing it to roll across the floor. In a strange turn of events, a dog that was high on weed ran over and ate the heart.

According to Bush, there had to be a way for Dan to not receive the heart. The decision to have a dog that was high and hungry due to consuming weed eat the heart was a unique and extreme choice that was made.

Bush found the scene to be quite silly, questioning why the item was placed in a lunch box instead of being properly sealed to prevent contamination. She found herself getting distracted by these details, unable to fully focus on the scene.

She also pondered whether her negative reaction was influenced by years of criticism and ridicule towards similar scenes in the past. This made her wonder if she was simply predisposed to disliking it without giving it a fair chance.

Lenz agreed with Bush, saying that the mistake made was not building up the scene enough. He mentioned that if they had started by showing the medic who didn't seal the thing properly after a night of drinking, and if they had developed the case with plausible explanations, it would have paid off. Lenz suggested that if they had explored why the heart was the perfect storm, it would have been more satisfying. He also mentioned that there were ways to improve the storyline, but unfortunately, it didn't happen.

The women were engrossed in discussing the latest episode of OTH and didn't touch upon Bush's recent major life events, such as her coming out as queer. She revealed her sexuality in an essay for Glamour on April 25th and received immediate support from her former OTH costars, including Lenz.

Lenz left a supportive comment on Bush's Instagram post, saying, "Your open-hearted living is so, so inspiring. I love you."

Bush and girlfriend Ashlyn Harris made their red carpet debut at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday, April 27.

Editor's P/S:

The infamous "dog eats a heart" scene from "One Tree Hill" continues to elicit mixed reactions from former castmates Sophia Bush and Bethany Joy Lenz. While Lenz appreciates the episode's poignant moments, she acknowledges the absurdity of the dog incident, suggesting that it could have been better developed with more plausible explanations. Bush, on the other hand, finds the scene unintentionally humorous due to its outlandish nature and questions the logic behind using a lunch box for such a sensitive medical item.

Despite their differing opinions on the specific scene, both Bush and Lenz remain passionate about "One Tree Hill" and the impact it has had on their lives. They also express their support for each other's personal journeys, with Lenz applauding Bush's recent coming out as queer. The article highlights the enduring legacy of the show and the strong bond among its cast members who continue to share their experiences and support one another both on and off the screen.
