Warning! This article contains spoilers for Ahsoka episode 7.
Summary
In Ahsoka episode 7, it is revealed that Thrawn's soldiers, known as "Night Troopers," were not reanimated Imperial stormtroopers influenced by the Nightsisters, debunking the theory. The modifications made to the stormtrooper armor in episode 6 were primarily for repairs, suggesting that the soldiers faced severe conditions during their time on Peridea.
The Chimera's cargo appears to consist of coffins, potentially holding the bodies of deceased Nightsisters and Nightbrothers. This suggests that they may have a larger role to play in the upcoming war.
The return of Grand Admiral Thrawn in Ahsoka episode 6 raised many questions and theories. However, episode 7 has completely disproven one of the leading theories. There has been much speculation surrounding what happened to Thrawn and his stormtroopers during their decade-long exile on Peridea. In Ahsoka episode 6, Thrawn's troops were introduced, and their modified and patched armor was significantly different from when they were last seen in the Star Wars Rebels series finale.
Grand Admiral Thrawn repeatedly mentioned that his forces had suffered significant losses, preventing him from allocating additional units to eliminate Sabine Wren and Ezra Bridger. Being a skilled strategist, Thrawn has already calculated the amount of resources he can spare for essential tasks prior to his departure with Morgan Elsbeth from Peridea. The events in Ahsoka episode 7 reveal that Thrawn is willing to accept casualties in critical situations, following the advice of the Nightsisters' Great Mothers. This refutes a significant theory, as it proves that he can endure losses within his forces.
Thrawn's "Night Troopers" Seemed Connected To The Nightsisters
When the captions in Episode 6 of Ahsoka referred to Thrawn's stormtroopers as "Night Troopers," many believed that there was a direct link between these soldiers and the Nightsisters residing on Peridea. The Nightsisters had a known ability to raise armies from the dead, as demonstrated when General Grievous attacked Dathomir in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The red ribbons used to keep the Night Troopers' armor together fueled speculation that these soldiers were reanimated Imperial stormtroopers. Considering the immense power of the three Great Mothers, this theory seemed quite plausible.
Given the use of Nightsister magic to revive Marrok in a previous episode of Ahsoka, it appeared to further support the idea that the Inquisitor was foreshadowing the introduction of Night Troopers. However, what initially seemed like a planted seed now appears to be a deliberate misdirection. The stormtroopers aboard the Chimaera were not definitively killed during the Liberation of Lothal, making any potential magic resurrections unnecessary. Instead of being revived corpses powered by the Great Mothers, the Night Troopers are simply named for their role in furthering Thrawn's cause.
Ahsoka Episode 7 Reveals Night Troopers Are Just... Stormtroopers
The visual appearance of the stormtrooper armor in Ahsoka episode 6 was quite striking, featuring new gold inlays and red ribbons. However, these modifications were evidently made for repair purposes rather than for aesthetic reasons. The extent of the challenging conditions faced by the Imperial forces during their exile on Peridea remains unclear, but Thrawn's eagerness to leave this forsaken world suggests that the soldiers have indeed endured a grueling conflict.
In Ahsoka episode 4, Ahsoka Tano's encounter with Marrok resulted in his body bursting into green smoke, revealing him to be an Inquisitor whose body had been reanimated by the Nightsister Morgan Elsbeth. However, in Ahsoka episode 7, when Sabine Wren, Ezra Bridger, and Ahsoka Tano overcame Thrawn's Night Troopers, there was no sign of green smoke. This implies that the individuals wearing the armor were simply ordinary men. While the Night Troopers may harbor a heightened loyalty towards Grand Admiral Thrawn due to their survival under his command, they are ultimately no different from regular stormtroopers.
What Cargo Is Thrawn Taking From Peridea?
While the Night Troopers under Grand Admiral Thrawn turned out to be nothing more than regular stormtroopers with impressive armor, the contents being loaded onto the Chimera remain a mystery. The shape and quantity of the cases suggest that they could potentially be coffins, possibly holding the bodies of deceased Nightsisters and Nightbrothers from a forgotten era. It is conceivable that the Great Mothers intend to transport these fallen Dathomiri individuals to the main Star Wars galaxy, potentially to serve as soldiers in the impending war.
It is clear that Grand Admiral Thrawn has forged a mutually advantageous alliance with the Great Mothers, but whether the cargo being loaded is intended to benefit himself or the Nightsisters in the long term remains uncertain. With Thrawn's imminent return to the main Star Wars galaxy, the true nature of the cargo aboard the Chimera is bound to be revealed soon. However, given that there is only one episode of Ahsoka left, it may be a while before audiences witness the reanimated forces in action.
