Ryan Koss admitted to having a prior friendship with Treat Williams prior to a fatal accident involving the two.
On Tuesday, August 1, the Vermont State Police announced that Koss is being charged with grossly negligent operation resulting in death. According to the VSP, Koss was driving a Honda Element SUV on June 12 when he turned into the path of Williams' motorcycle. Williams, known for his role in Everwood, sustained critical injuries and was taken to Albany Medical Center in Albany, New York, where he ultimately passed away. The cause of death was determined to be severe trauma and blood loss. Williams was 71 years old.
Koss, the managing creative director of Dorset Theatre Festival, released a statement on Friday, August 4. This comes after he voluntarily met with officials for processing and charges. Through his attorney, Ian Carleton of Sheehey Furlong & Behm, Koss expressed his confidence that the facts will demonstrate his compliance with all relevant traffic laws. He considers the charges brought by the State to be unwarranted, as reported by Manchester Journal, where Williams had been involved in multiple productions.
Koss expressed his deep devastation over the tragic passing of Mr. Williams in his statement. Having known Treat for many years, both as a fellow theater maker and a member of this close-knit community, Koss considered him a friend. Recognizing the profound impact of this sudden loss on Williams's family, Koss extends his heartfelt condolences to them.
Surviving Mr. Williams are his wife, Pam Van Sant, whom he was married to for 35 years, as well as their two children, Gill Williams, aged 31, and Elinor "Ellie" Williams, aged 25. The day after his death, Hair star's daughter took to social media to pay tribute to her beloved father.
Ellie, 25, expressed her deep sorrow through her Instagram Story on Tuesday, June 13. She shared a throwback photo of Treat and another image of a jacket adorned with his name. In her post, she thanked everyone who had sent messages and kept their family in their thoughts during this painful time.
Earlier, Treat's representative, Barry McPherson, confirmed the actor's passing. He stated that Treat had been involved in a fatal accident, with a car cutting him off while he was making a turn. McPherson expressed his devastation, highlighting Treat's kind nature and immense talent.
Following his passing, Williams’ family and friends mourned him at an intimate memorial service on June 19 in Vermont, where he resided for many years.
