A man in Tokyo, Japan was arrested for stalking and harassing a woman through multiple outlets, including following her character around in Final Fantasy 14.

Despite a lackluster start, Final Fantasy 14 has become increasingly popular thanks to ongoing support from Square Enix. This online multiplayer game focuses on teamwork, providing players with a collaborative experience.

A recent incident in Japan has shed light on the potential for stalking in online games and social media platforms. This incident raises concerns about the need for tighter moderation on video game servers to ensure the safety of players.

In Japan, a man was imprisoned for stalking a woman through various methods, including the use of Final Fantasy 14. Stalking is a terrible crime that unfortunately many gamers have been victims of in the past.

Following a disappointing release in 2010, Final Fantasy 14 underwent significant revisions and was relaunched in 2013 with the subtitle A Realm Reborn, receiving a much more positive reception. Even after a decade and the release of two more mainline games, Square Enix continues to heavily support this installment, with four (soon to be five) expansion campaigns and numerous smaller updates being released to this day. As an MMORPG, this game places a strong emphasis on playing online with a large community of players and promoting teamwork. Only recently, with a recent update, has Final Fantasy 14's story become playable as a single-player experience, although an internet connection is still required at all times.

Being a game of this type presents numerous opportunities for players to interact and communicate with individuals from around the globe. Unfortunately, this also creates a significant risk for stalking incidents. According to Kobe News, a 38-year-old man from Tokyo, Japan was apprehended on October 17 for stalking a woman who was ten years younger than him. This harassment took place across various platforms, including Final Fantasy 14. The detained individual's in-game character persistently followed the woman's character and continually bombarded her with messages, even after she repeatedly requested him to stop and blocked him. The content of these messages was both threatening and abusive, with the man leveraging the disclosure of their past interactions to gain the woman's attention.

The extent of stalking in the Final Fantasy 14 game remains unclear, as similar behavior was reported on social media platforms like Line and Twitter through direct messaging. Despite denying some charges, claiming no romantic intentions, the man's actions still violate Japan's Anti-Stalking Control Law. The man's identity and the victim's remain undisclosed.

Fortunately, the situation did not escalate further, ensuring the woman's safety from the harasser. While Final Fantasy 14 prohibits harassment on its servers, no in-game penalties were mentioned in the story. This raises the need for a discussion on more stringent moderation of online video game servers, considering other games have faced criticism for insufficient player protection.

Final Fantasy 14 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
