Mortal Kombat 1 serves as a fresh start for the universe's narrative. In the latest Kombat Kast, the game's Kameo fighters, including Sektor, continue to embrace nostalgia. The roster of Kameo Fighters offers a diverse mix of characters, featuring throwback versions of familiar faces like Scorpion and Sonya Blade, as well as lesser-known characters like Darrius and Sareena. Sektor falls into the former category, and his fatality takes inspiration from his original appearance in the franchise.
Following Liu Kang's ascension to godhood and Kronika's defeat in Mortal Kombat 11, Mortal Kombat 1 reboots the series' narrative. Under the watch of the Fire God, a new timeline is constructed, bringing about an unprecedented era of peace. However, this peace comes with significant changes to the histories of various characters, including Scorpion and Sub-Zero now being portrayed as brothers. Despite Liu Kang's efforts, a new and mysterious threat is emerging, threatening to plunge the realms back into the deadly cycle of combat from the original timeline.
The Kameo fighters in the game pay tribute to the franchise's 30-year history through their retro character designs and classic fatalities. NetherRealm further emphasized this in their latest gameplay stream, the Kombat Kast, where they featured Sektor's original fatality from Mortal Kombat 3. So far, NetherRealm has also revealed the fatalities for Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Sonya Blade, Kano, and Jax, all of whom use killing blows from the early days of Mortal Kombat. Although Jax's Kameo design seems to be inspired by Mortal Kombat 2, NetherRealm chose to incorporate his fatality from Mortal Kombat 3.
NetherRealm has a wide selection of Kameo fighters to feature in upcoming streams or trailers. Currently, 13 out of the 16 launch Kameo roster members have been announced. Sareena, who first appeared in 1997's Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, has been revealed as part of the Kameo roster, along with Reptile, Ashrah, and Havik. With only three spots remaining, players can only speculate whether NetherRealm will delve further into the franchise's history to complete the Kameo roster.
Mortal Kombat 1 is set to be released on September 19, 2023, for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
