Sam Hunt and his wife Hannah Lee Fowler have faced their share of challenges in their love story, but they have remained dedicated to each other through it all.
They first met in their early 20s and dated for about four years before going their separate ways when Hunt relocated to Nashville to pursue his music career. Fowler then moved to Hawaii, but Hunt held onto their memories, even naming his debut album "Montevallo" after her hometown.
After reconciling in 2016 and announcing their engagement in January 2017, the couple seemed to be happily married. However, in February 2022, Fowler filed for divorce, alleging Hunt of "inappropriate marital conduct" and "adultery." Despite this, the divorce was called off in April 2022, and the couple welcomed their daughter Lucy one month later. By November 2023, they had their second baby.

Sam Hunt’s Ups and Downs With Wife Hannah Lee Fowler Through the Years: Breakup, Reconciliation and More
Sam Hunt and his wife Hannah Lee Fowler's love story has been far from smooth, but they have remained dedicated to each other through it all.
They first met in their early 20s and dated for about four years before breaking up when Hunt made the decision to move to Nashville and pursue a music career. Following their split, Fowler relocated to Hawaii, but Hunt couldn't forget their time together and even named his debut album, Montevallo, after her hometown.
In 2016, the couple reconciled and publicly announced their engagement in January 2017. However, in February 2022, Fowler filed for divorce and accused Hunt of "guilty of inappropriate marital conduct" and "adultery." The divorce was later called off in April 2022. Their daughter Lucy was born a month later and by November 2023, they welcomed their second child.

The couple first crossed paths when Hunt, who had previously attempted to join the Kansas City Chiefs after a successful college football career, decided to explore a career in music. They went through periods of dating and breaking up for several years before officially ending things when Hunt relocated to Nashville to pursue a career as a songwriter.

Hunt's debut album, Montevallo, drew inspiration from his tumultuous, years-long romance. In a 2014 interview with ABC News Radio, he reflected, "I probably should have included her as a cowriter on a lot of these songs because I spent a lot of time chatting with her." He also noted, "I got a lot of insight into females in general from being in a close relationship with her. I used a lot of that when writing the songs, because a lot of the songs are relationship-based."

After their breakup, Hunt couldn't stop thinking about Fowler and flew to Hawaii to see her, where she was living at the time. "Last summer, I went out to Hawaii about seven times in three months," he told Entertainment Tonight. "I was trying to talk to her about coming back. And on the seventh trip, I convinced her."

Hunt released the heartfelt ballad "Drinking Too Much" as a public apology to Fowler for the pain he caused during their relationship and time apart. In the song, he expresses remorse for naming his album Montevallo, which brought her unwanted attention, and offers to pay off her student loans with the songs she gave him. Two days after releasing the track, it was confirmed by Us that Hunt and Fowler were engaged. Hunt proposed during a trip to Israel, and despite a recent disagreement, he described the moment as perfect and celebrated their excitement together.

During his performance of "Body Like a Back Road" at the Academy of Country Music Awards, Hunt took the opportunity to serenade his partner, Fowler, who was in the audience. "I had told her that I might come down and sing to her, but I don’t think she knew I was going to plop down next to her," he revealed to E! News later. "It was her first time attending an awards show like that, so I just wanted to throw her into the deep end. Despite not enjoying those 30 seconds very much, she came out and was so much more comfortable afterward!"
The couple got married in an intimate ceremony in Hunt's hometown of Cedartown, Georgia. "We are both kind of introverted people for the most part, so we don’t like celebrating ourselves too much," Hunt told CBS at the time. "If there ever is a time to do it, it is now, and it is more to celebrate the union of marriage than it is [about] each other. I am excited about doing that.”

"It feels amazing to be married." Hunt also expressed the "spiritual strength" he feels when he wears his wedding ring, saying, "I feel a little bit taller now that I’m wearing it."

Hunt openly acknowledged the challenges Fowler faces in embracing her public persona. "She has her own life, ambitions, and dreams that are important to her, and I want to support those just as much as she's supported me," he shared with Entertainment Tonight. "I think it's been a bit unbalanced in these early weeks of our marriage, so I definitely owe her... but she's enjoying herself."

Hunt was apprehended in downtown Nashville, Tennessee for driving under the influence. Law enforcement took him into custody after witnessing him driving in the wrong direction and weaving between lanes. His blood alcohol content was .173, well exceeding the legal limit of .08. A day later, Hunt expressed regret on Twitter, acknowledging his actions as a "poor and selfish decision," and offered an apology for putting others at risk and letting them down unknowingly.
Just two months following his arrest, Hunt released the single "Sinning With You," which delves into his personal struggles and their impact on others. In the song, he addresses his checkered past and how it contrasted with someone else's spotless record, acknowledging the effect of his choices.

After the triumph of "Body Like a Back Road," Hunt decided to take a break from music and social media in order to prioritize his marriage. "I asked myself the question, are you willing to retire and give all this up for Fowler?" Hunt revealed to The New York Times. "I made the commitment to do so."
Hunt expressed his awareness of the impact on his wife and emphasized the importance of making sure she felt at ease with the content of his music. "I was always concerned about her not feeling like I was taking advantage of our relationship, but she actually enjoys hearing the real person she knows in the songs," he explained.

In his second album, Southside, Hunt delved into his relationship with Fowler and expressed remorse for the challenges he put her through before they reconciled. "I thought I wanted my freedom, I told myself I'd have a ball / But it turns out going out and chasing dreams and lonely women / Ain't freedom after all," Hunt sings on "2016," the opening track of the album. "If I could go back now and take it back somehow / I'd drive a thousand miles to your house, walk in like I walked out ... I'd take 2016 and give it back to you."

February 2022
After almost five years of marriage, Fowler has filed for divorce, citing "inappropriate marital conduct" and "adultery" by Hunt. She also disclosed that she is expecting their first child in May 2022 and has requested to be named the primary residential guardian. Following her initial divorce complaint, Fowler filed a Notice of Voluntary Nonsuit, indicating that she is no longer pursuing a legal separation from Hunt.
At 2:13 p.m. in Tennessee, she submitted the withdrawal paperwork after initially filing for divorce at 11:43 a.m. on February 18. Her decision was labeled as "voluntary nonsuited without prejudice," allowing her to potentially file for divorce again in the future. However, state law prevented her from withdrawing the divorce filing a second time.
It was later revealed that Fowler withdrew her original divorce petition due to it being filed in the wrong county. Subsequently, her lawyers resubmitted the same petition in Williamson County on February 18 after retracting the incorrect Davidson County filing.

They're both very focused on the baby's arrival." At that time, the couple did not publicly address their reconciliation.

During a charity performance in Nashville, Hunt shared the news that he has become a father. "I recently welcomed a baby girl named Lucy Lu," he revealed. "I feel like being in the music industry and constantly on the road has made me tough in many ways since leaving my hometown. It's incredible how my daughter has completely melted away that hardness in just a couple of weeks."

Following the arrival of their daughter, Hunt and Fowler received advice from a source who shared with Us that Hunt aimed for the public's attention to be on his music and career rather than his personal life. The insider characterized the couple's marriage as a "work in progress," stating, "[Sam] is hopeful that he and Hannah can return to their previous dynamic before the divorce. ... Now that he's a father, he is eager to set a positive example for his baby girl."
