Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the original directors of Solo: A Star Wars Story, recently spoke about Ryan Gosling's upcoming film, Project Hail Mary. The movie is based on Andy Weir's 2021 sci-fi novel and follows a teacher-turned-astronaut on a mission to save Earth from an impending ice age by traveling to a distant galaxy. Lord and Miller shared new details on the movie's storyline during a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, highlighting its unconventional characters and benevolent themes. Lord explained that their experience working on Solo helped clarify what was important to them in developing the story for Project Hail Mary, which they anticipate will be a challenging but rewarding project.
It was a daunting task to create a character with no face and communicate solely through music, but we were up for the challenge. During the production of Spider-Verse, there were concerns that the concept would be too confusing for audiences, but we believed in their intelligence and ability to grasp the idea.
Lord and Miller have a number of exciting projects in the works before they team up with Ryan Gosling and Drew Goddard for Project Hail Mary, which is slated to begin production early in 2024. They recently served as producers on the upcoming comedy Strays, starring Will Ferrell as a vengeful dog seeking revenge on his former neglectful owner. In addition, the directing duo returned to the Spider-Man universe with the highly anticipated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and its sequel, Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Before Gosling joins Lord and Miller for Project Hail Mary, he will star as Ken in the upcoming film Barbie, alongside Margot Robbie. Gosling will also contribute his musical talents to the movie by performing an original song for its soundtrack. Following Barbie, Gosling will take on the role of veteran stuntman Colt in David Leitch's adaptation of The Fall Guy, alongside a star-studded cast including Emily Blunt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Winston Duke, and Stephanie Hsu.
Fans of Lord and Miller eagerly anticipate their return to theatrical directing with Project Hail Mary, especially after their departure from Solo: A Star Wars Story's production. With several other projects in development, including Gosling's Wolf Man reimagining, there is much excitement for what the duo will bring to the sci-fi adaptation.
