Margot Robbie has spoken to Vogue about her role in the highly anticipated "Barbie" movie. In the magazine's summer issue cover story, the actress discusses the challenges involved in bringing the film to life, including the efforts of her production company, LuckyChap, to turn the long-discussed project into a reality. Robbie also reveals her role in convincing Greta Gerwig and her partner, Noah Baumbach, to write and direct the film.
"We want to pay tribute to the 60-year history of the brand, but it's important to recognize that there are individuals who hold negative feelings towards Barbie. It's not just a matter of indifference, as some actively despise her and have genuine grievances with the doll. As such, we must find a way to address these concerns," stated Robbie. She will be portraying the iconic Mattel toy, while Ryan Gosling will take on the role of Barbie's boyfriend, Ken.

During an interview with Vogue, Gosling revealed that his co-star had a creative approach to getting him into character. She gifted him a daily present with a pink bow, signed from Barbie to Ken, all of which were beach-themed. The gifts included items like puka shells and a sign that read "Pray for surf," which were meant to help Gosling's character, Ken, who works at the beach, better understand his surroundings. While he admits to not fully grasping the meaning behind the gifts, Gosling appreciated the effort put forth by his co-star.
Gerwig also assisted Robbie in discovering her inner Barbie by suggesting that she listen to the podcast "This American Life." Robbie shared that she expressed to Gerwig her need to embark on a character journey, to which Gerwig responded by recommending the podcast. The podcast, according to Gerwig, features a woman who does not have a voice in her head, which helped Robbie with her character development.
"Barbie" is in theaters July 21.
