Romelu Lukaku is set to complete his season-long loan agreement with Roma today following his medical examination on Tuesday. The transfer involves a direct loan arrangement, with a fee ranging from £7m to £8m, depending on conditions related to his performance.
Roma has agreed to cover Lukaku's wages while he takes a salary reduction for the remaining three years of his Chelsea contract. Additionally, his contract includes a release clause, estimated to be around £38m.
Roma officials Ryan Friedkin and Tiago Pinto traveled to London over the weekend for direct discussions with Chelsea regarding a potential agreement to secure Lukaku's transfer to the Italian capital for the upcoming season. Lukaku, who spent the previous season on loan at Inter Milan due to falling out of favor at Chelsea, had expressed his discontent under former head coach Thomas Tuchel in a contentious interview.
The striker expressed a strong desire to return to Italy and gladly opted for Rome due to his eagerness to reunite with manager Jose Mourinho. Earlier this summer, Juventus engaged in discussions with Chelsea regarding the acquisition of Lukaku, and Inter also showed interest in bringing the Belgian international back to Italy.
Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal were also interested in signing the 30-year-old, who signed for Chelsea from Inter for £97.5m in August 2021.
Bayern talks ongoing over Chalobah
Talks between Bayern Munich and Chelsea are ongoing over the signing of defender Trevoh Chalobah.
The payment structure and terms are currently under negotiation, but it is believed that Chalobah is eager to make the move and there are no expected issues with the personal terms. All parties are optimistic about reaching a deal.
Bayern see Chalobah as a replacement for Inter Milan-bound Benjamin Pavard.
Chalobah has five years left on his contract with the option of a further 12 months.
Meanwhile, midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu is expected to stay part of the first-team squad.
